Expert Reveals Ancient Oil Hack That Melts Belly Fat During Sleep

This centuries-old remedy could be your key to effortless fat loss.

Tired of complicated diets and endless workout routines that don't seem to target stubborn belly fat? An unexpected solution might be hiding in your kitchen cabinet. Dr. Janine Bowring, a naturopathic doctor, best-selling author, and mother of five, has rediscovered an ancient remedy that's helping people transform their bodies while they sleep. In this article, she reveals her step-by-step process for using this traditional oil in a modern fat-loss approach.

The Ancient Oil Making a Modern Comeback

"Belly fat is usually the most difficult to deal with and to eradicate," Dr. Bowring says in her post. Her solution draws from traditional medicine: "Castor oil is a vegetable oil made from the seed of the Ricinus communis plant. These are castor beans and they have a very high triglyceride fatty acid composition, and it's 90% of those fatty acids. The active ingredient is known as oleic acid."

Why This Traditional Remedy Works on Stubborn Fat

The science behind this ancient remedy is compelling. Dr. Bowring explains, "What this is known to do is to help to extract toxins. It helps to increase our inner circulation, helps with detoxification and helps to improve our glutathione levels. Glutathione is our mother of all antioxidants, which plays an important role in our liver detoxification."

The Hidden Benefits for Your Body[

This remedy does more than target fat. "Especially for women, but for the guys as well, helps with estrogen detoxification," Dr. Bowring reveals. "We also know that castor oil helps to improve overall circulation. It helps to heat things up as well as helping to eradicate that extra water weight that you may be holding onto in the midsection."

Choosing the Right Oil for Results

Success starts with quality ingredients. "Make sure it's a high quality one and that it doesn't have any hexane. So hexane free castor oil," Dr. Bowring emphasizes. She notes this is "a great and surprising hack that maybe you've never seen before."

The application process is specific and purposeful. "I put a couple of tablespoons on my palm, and I do this always at bedtime," Dr. Bowring shares. She continues, "I go around five times clockwise around my abdomen with that castor oil. Then I go over to the ileocecal valve... and then my last move to help to move that lymph is downwards motion. So down each side of the abdomen down five times."

The Essential Wrapping Method

wash, cloth, flannel, towels

The wrapping technique is crucial for overnight effectiveness. "Get some cotton or flannel, something that has ideally not been bleached or washed in any type of toxic detergent," Dr. Bowring instructs. "All you're going to do now with that cotton or flannel, you are going to now wrap that around the abdomen, the entire midsection where you have applied that castor oil."

A practical consideration is important here. "Don't wear really nice bed clothing, your pajamas. Make sure it's not your best silk pajamas because it will ruin, it will stain. So I just wear like an old t-shirt and shorts to bed when I'm doing this, and because it will, that castor oil will stain your clothes."

We strive to only recommend products that adhere to our philosophy of eating better while still enjoying what you eat.

You’ve heard that “you are what you eat,” but when it comes to weight loss, you are also how you sleep. Science has found a link between sleep and obesity, which means that cleaning up your sleep hygiene can help you achieve your weight loss goals. Celebrity fitness trainer and health and wellness expertJenna Willis maintains that there are a few bedtime rituals that can help prime your body for weight loss overnight.

Drink a Cup of Herbal Tea

Her first recommendation is to drink a cup of herbal tea. “Enjoying caffeine-free herbal tea, such as chamomile or peppermint, helps relax your body and aids in digestion, creating the perfect conditions for overnight fat burning,” the Los Angeles-based fitness expert, whose clients include Camila Cabello and Lala Kent, tells Body Network.

Studies Find That Tea Offers Lots of Other Health Benefits

Science agrees with Willis and then some. Numerous studies have shown that a variety of teas may boost your immune system, fight off inflammation, and even ward off cancer and heart disease.

Eat Your Last Meal Five Hours Before Bed

Next, make sure to go to bed on an empty stomach, says Willis. “Eating late can cause your digestive system to stay active while you sleep, leading to discomfort, indigestion, or acid reflux,” she explains.

It Will Give Your Body Time to Digest

There are other benefits to eating your last meal earlier. “Stopping food intake earlier allows your body to fully digest, promoting better rest, as your body is focused on rest rather than digestion!” she says.

Avoid Late-Night Snacking

She also recommends avoiding the urge to snack at night. “Giving your body a break from food a few hours before bed allows your metabolism to focus on burning stored fat instead of digesting late-night snacks,” she says.

There Are Benefits of Time Restricted Eating

Intermittent fasting, health care asian young woman dietary, having stomach ache, temptation hungry of breakfast food in morning on table at home, looking at watch on her wrist but not yet time to eatShutterstock

Avoiding late night snacking and eating your last meal earlier in the day are part of intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting works by “prolonging the period when your body has burned through the calories consumed during your last meal and begins burning fat,” explains Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Set a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Next, be consistent with your sleep schedule. “Sticking to the same bedtime and wake-up time each day helps regulate your body’s internal clock, enhancing metabolism and promoting fat burning,” says Willis.

Sleep Boasts So Many Benefits

There are so many benefits of sleep. According to the Sleep Foundation, getting enough z’s is a mood booster, promotes heart health, regulates blood sugar, improves mental function, restores your immune system, helps relieve stress, and aids in weight loss.

Turn Off Screens

Another great nighttime health habit? Turn off your screens. “Minimizing blue light exposure from devices before bed supports melatonin production, improving sleep quality and boosting overnight weight loss,” says Willis.

It seems too good to be true, but you can actually burn belly fat while you sleep. Max Posternak, a fitness trainer and influencer who founded Gravity Transformation, regularly shares tips and tricks on how to blast fat and get into shape efficiently and effectively. In a recent viral video, he discusses a few things you can do to accelerate weight loss, even when you are resting. “Here are three extremely effective tips to burn more fat while sleeping,” he says at the start of the clip. Body Network’s Resident RDN, The Diet Diva, Tara Collingwood, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD/N, ACSM-CPT, a Board Certified Sports Dietitian, co-author of the Flat Belly Cookbook for Dummies, also weighs in on his tips.

Make Sure You Are Getting Enough Iodine, Zinc, Selenium, and Vitamin D

First, you want to “optimize your thyroid function mostly by making sure that you're getting enough iodine, zinc, selenium, and vitamin D,” says Posternak. “Make sure you're having iodine, salt for iodine, oysters for zinc, seafood for selenium and sunlight exposure, or a supplement for vitamin D.” How does this help? “Optimizing your thyroid function can increase your metabolism by up to a thousand calories a day.”

Build More Muscle

Next tip? Build more muscle. “Not only does muscle mass require a lot of calories to maintain even while you sleep, but it also increases insulin sensitivity and depletes glycogen stores, which will help recycle carbohydrates rather than storing them as fat,” he says.

Eat More Protein

“And the third thing is to eat more protein, at least 0.7 grams of protein per pound of body weight,” says Posternak. “This is because protein has a high thermic effect. This means that the amount of energy it takes for your body to digest, process, and store protein is much higher when compared to other nutrients. Some studies estimate that between 15 to 30 percent of the calories taken in from protein are used right back up during the digestion process.”

Body Network’s Resident RDN Weighs In

Collingwood agrees that thyroid function is important when it comes to burning fat. However, “eating more of these nutrients isn’t going to necessarily make your thyroid work ‘better’ or burn more calories,” she says. A deficiency in the nutrients he mentions could affect thyroid function, but there are plenty of foods you can eat for these nutrients if you don’t enjoy oysters and seafood,” she adds.

Or, if you don’t like any foods with these nutrients, you can always take a multivitamin just as a catch-all to ensure daily intake. She completely agrees with his muscle-building suggestion. “The more muscle you have on your body, the more calories you burn 24 hours a day, even while you sleep! You also burn more working, exercising, and relaxing,” she notes. And, yes,” protein burns calories while digesting, keeps you full longer, and helps you preserve muscle while trying to lose weight,” she says.

One More Tip: Move All Day

Collingwood offers another tip. “Increase your metabolism for the entire day by staying moving as much as possible,” she encourages. “Sitting all day long, which most of us do, significantly reduces metabolism. Try to go for a 3 to 5-minute walk every 60 to 90 minutes throughout your work day to keep that metabolism up!”

Do you want to get rid of excess fat around your midsection? Jillian Michaels is a fitness expert and star of The Biggest Loser. In a new YouTube video, she discusses blasting belly fat. “Let's talk about belly fat. You guys are constantly asking me how I reduce belly fat. What food should I eat to reduce belly fat? What workout should I do to reduce belly fat? And you guys Google it so often that even I have been guilty of saying, ‘Hey, let's reduce belly fat,’ just to get you to pay attention to the actual answer,” she jokes. In all seriousness, she offers her tips on how to blast belly fat.

You Can’t Spot Reduce Fat

“So first of all, we cannot spot-reduce fat. We can't, it's physiologically impossible. You can go to a doctor. They can lipo-suck it outta your body. It's expensive. There are all kinds of side effects. It's unnecessary. I don't recommend it, but that's the only way to do that,” she says.

Hormone Balance Determines Where You Store Fat

man with overweight. symbolic photo for beer belly, unsuccessful dieting and eating the wrong foods. Weight loss concept. Tight shirt.Shutterstock

“The way in which our body stores fat is dictated by your hormone balance. So that's why you see things like a woman is a pear. A woman can be an apple, or we can be evenly proportioned, right? But men are always apples. If you see a guy who has fat on his lower body, he likely has a hormone imbalance,” she says.

Belly Fat Is Based on Testosterone Levels

Young woman touching her belly looking in mirror at homeShutterstock

“So what is this saying? So, this is saying that belly fat is predominantly based on your testosterone levels. So if we have more testosterone, we are more prone to store excess energy as fat on our abdomen,” she says. “Now, if you're an estrogen-dominant female, you're gonna store more weight in your lower body, which is my blessing.”

The Answer? Reducing Body Fat Overall

“So we can't spot reduce fat. So what do we do? Right? There's gotta be an answer. We've gotta reduce body fat overall,” she says.

No Diet Spot Reduces Fat

Woman body fat belly. Obese Woman with fat upset about her belly. Fat woman with tight clothing worried about weight diet lifestyle concept.Shutterstock

“Now, there is no diet to reduce fat. There are no foods that burn fat. There, there, there, it just, it, it doesn't exist. Okay?” says Michaels.

First, You Need to Manage Your Stress

Black man in business, night and headache with stress and vision problem, crisis and burnout from overtime. Professional male with migraine, brain fog and work late with loss of focus and overworkedShutterstock

“There are ways of eating that will help reduce bloat, right? There are certain foods we can eat that will help inhibit cortisol production because cortisol is actually the belly fat hormone.

So, if we can keep that hormone down, it's a stress hormone. So you gotta manage your stress,” she says.

You Also Need to Get Sleep

The second thing you need to do? “You gotta sleep,” says Michaels.

Meditation Is Also Key

Next up, get your zen on. “You gotta meditate,” Michaels recommends.

Avoid Foods Rich in Vitamin C

One thing to avoid? “You can't eat foods that are rich in vitamin C because vitamin C can inhibit cortisol production. You can keep your sodium a little lower because that can also inhibit cortisol production. And it's gonna keep you from storing weight here,” she says.

And, Don’t Drink a Lot of Alcohol

She also suggests putting down the bottle. “Alcohol and the way that it affects your metabolism will shift your hormone balance. You're gonna store more fat in your belly. So if you're trying to lose weight, don't be drinking so much,” she says.

Hydrate

Next up, hydrate. “Drink a lot of water to help you flush out any excess bloat,” she recommends.

Overall, Eat Fewer Calories and Move More

In terms of exercise, “at the end of the day, there is no exercise to spot reduce fat,” she says. “There is no food to spot reduce fat. So what is going to be the most effective thing is eating less food so that we're reducing our calories and then working out or moving more so that we're increasing our calorie burn. So our body's going into fat stores, and we're burning body fat overall.”

Lift Weights

“The fitness techniques that are gonna be the most metabolic are gonna be weightlifting or resistance training. So resistance training, weightlifting, circuit training,” she adds.

HIIT Workouts

She also recommends “exercises in swift succession,” she says. “The way you see me design all my workouts, HIIT intervals are super effective. And the more advanced techniques as you get more fit, like plyometrics, things that are explosive and dynamic burn more calories.”

Overall, You Have to Take a “Holistic” Approach

“That's how you gotta think of it. There's no special food. There's no exercise. We just gotta be healthy overall and take it in a very holistic way,” she says, summing up the video. And if you enjoyed this article, don't miss 12-3-30 Walking Method: 20 Proven Tips to Lose Weight Faster.

Do you want to burn fat without counting calories or spending hours at the gym? Abram Anderson is a weight loss coach who regularly shares tips on how to burn fat fast. In a few new video post, he reveals simple hacks for burning fat that take very little effort. “Do you want to lose weight faster than what you're currently doing? But you do not want to count calories, you do not want to take supplements, and you don't want to have to use willpower?” he says, going on to reveal them.

Focus on Speeding Up Your Metabolism

To burn fat fast, you need to rev up your fat-burning system. “One of the tips that I give,” he says in the post, “is to try to speed up your metabolism. There's a few different ways to speed up your metabolism extremely easily.”

Do 30 Seconds of an Activity Right Before You Eat

The first suggestion he has? “You can do 30 seconds of an activity right before you eat. You'll be able to increase your insulin sensitivity right before you eat. You'll be able to eat the same number of calories and store less as fat that way, plus you have a higher metabolism,” he says.

Or, Add Spices to Your Food

“Or you can try to eat spicier food,” he says. “If you were just to add spices to your food, you can literally eat the same number of calories once again and actually burn more of them without having them stored as body fat,” he claims.

Two Tablespoons of Fermented Food Per Meal Helps Melt Body Fat

In another video, he reveals something you should add to every meal to melt body fat. “According to scientific research, two tablespoons of a fermented food with meals” is all you need “if you want to improve your microbiome and melt body fat drastically,” he says.

Kimchi Is the Best One to Eat

“It's not just any fermented food. According to our data, it seems that kimchi seems to far outweigh the benefits for weight loss and microbiome health compared to anything else,” he continues. “So the yogurt just doesn't cut it. But if you could have kimchi in your diet, it can do absolute wonders.”

Disruption of Blood Sugar Leads to Overeating

“If you want to learn how to stop overeating so you can melt body fat easier, this is the advice that we give to our clients inside of our health and life coaching program. And it's helped them melt 20, 50, a hundred plus pounds of body fat without counting calories,” he continues. “This advice might work for you, too. By far, the biggest thing that is leading to overeating is a disruption in your blood sugar levels.”

Here Is the Secret to Prevent Binge Eating

“What happens is you eat something that's high in carbohydrates and easy to digest, and you get a blood sugar spike. When you have a blood sugar spike, even if you're staying in normal ranges, your body will release insulin, which will cause a blood sugar spike down. That spike down causes you to feel uncontrollably hungry, where you feel like you can eat everything in sight,” he says. “The solution to this is to add in complex carbohydrates, water, and a food from nature inside of that meal, and that's how you prevent binge eating.”

And, Walking Is the Most Effective Workout for Losing Body Fat

“Walking has proven to be the most effective exercise for losing body fat, at least for my clients,” adding that “it doesn't actually require a whole lot of effort in order to see phenomenal results with it.” However, when you walk matters. “If you choose when you do your walk, you can actually maximize your results. So if you were to actually walk first thing in the morning or walk immediately after a workout for whatever reason, that seems to increase the amount of body fat you lose. And my theory is twofold,” he says.

Walking in the Morning Can Help Curb Cortisol Levels When They Are the Highest

“One, when you walk in the morning, you get sunshine, and your cortisol levels are the highest. You can actually curb that and better metabolize stress hormones because cortisol has been shown to be both anabolic to fat and catabolic muscle. So you can curb that if you walk in the morning,” he says.

Are you curious about what to expect after achieving your weight loss goals? You might be surprised what it is like, says one weight loss warrior. Emily Christensen is a social media influencer who lost 60 pounds after undergoing weight loss surgery and adopting a healthy lifestyle. She regularly shares tips and tricks with her followers about how she did it. In a new post, she reveals the truth about being overweight and thin. “Some brutal honesty from who has spent the majority of her life feeling fat and longed to be skinny,” she writes in the Instagram post.

When You Lose Weight, More Problems Surface

The first truth? You might find underlying problems after slimming down. “When you’re over weight that’s the only problem you want to solve. Once you lose the weight you realize how many underlying things are going on that have *actually* been causing issues. I’m talking relationships, spending, parenting,” she says.

Being Skinny Doesn’t Mean You Are Healthy

The second thing she learned? “Being skinny doesn’t mean you’re healthy,” she says. “When I was at my lowest weight I had lost a lot of muscle. Rebuilding that is kind of scary but I know it’ll serve me when I’m a fit grandma.”

Weight Loss Is Mental

Her third truth is that weight loss is mental. “There are a lot of tools out there that can help! But they’re still just tools. I have to talk to myself a LOT to remind myself I didn’t suddenly gain back 60+ pounds,” she writes.

You Might Still Be Obsessed with Your Weight

She goes onto explain that obsession with your weight might not end. “Before I lost weight I was really obsessed with losing weight. Now that I’ve lost weight I have times where I’m really obsessed with keeping it off. Not out of vanity but out of fear. I never want to go back to feeling how I did for so many years,” she writes.

Another truth? “No one cares about your journey as much as you do. Meaning…it’s not anyone’s job to eat what you eat. Or exercise with you. Your spouse/partner may or may not be on board with your new lifestyle. It’s up to you to buy and prepare the right foods and find the time to exercise,” she says.

Being Skinny Won’t Give Your More Self-Worth

Finally, getting thin won’t solve your self-esteem problems. “Being skinny isn’t going to give you more self worth. It might help you love your body more and appreciate what it’s done for you…but ‘skinny’ isn’t an attribute that very many people use when they talk about why they love someone,” she concludes. Are you on a high-protein diet for fat loss but can’t seem to lose weight? You could be making a common mistake, according to an expert. Cherisse Kozloski is a nutrition coach and personal trainer who helps her clients lose weight and keep it off. In a new post, she discusses some slip-ups that many seem to be making. Most women eating a high protein diet but not losing fat are making these common mistakes,” she writes. “Are these mistakes stopping your progress?”

Mistake 1: You Aren’t Counting Calories

The first mistake? “Not paying attention to your overall calories,” she reveals. “Eating more protein doesn’t automatically mean fat loss. If you’re not mindful of your portions, you could be consuming more calories than you burn, a surplus is a surplus.”

Solution: Measure or Weigh Your Food

How can you correct this? “Weigh or measure your food at least for a little while so you can get a good idea of what a serving size actually is,” she suggests.

Mistake 2: Choosing Food Labeled “High Protein

The second mistake people make? “Choosing foods labeled as ‘high protein’” she says. “Many foods labeled ‘high protein’ actually aren’t.”

Solution: Calculate Yourself

Her solution? Do your own calculations. “Remember the 10/1 rule for every 100 calories you want to get at least 10 grams of protein to be considered high protein,” she says.

Mistake 3: Skipping Healthy Fats

Mistake three has to do with going too low-fat. “Skipping healthy fats,” she says. “Avoiding fats completely can leave you hungry, mess with your hormones, and make it harder to stick to your diet.”

Solution: Eat Healthy Fats

The solution is simple. “Add fats into your diet like avocado, olive oil, and nuts,” she says. “But remember they are calorie dense so be mindful of how much you’re consuming.”

Mistake 4: Eating too Many Processed Foods

The fourth and final mistake? Just because something is high in protein doesn’t mean it’s good for you. “Eating too many processed foods,” is a no-no. “Protein bars and shakes are convenient but often packed with sugar and additives,” she says.

Solution: Eat Whole Food Protein Sources

Instead, stay away from packaged foods and shop the grocery store's perimeter. “Focus on whole-food protein sources like shrimp, boneless chicken thighs, and eggs to nourish your body and support fat loss,” she says. Are you just getting started on your weight loss journey and are overwhelmed by all the advice you are getting? According to one expert, there is a simple, foolproof approach. Dylan Hornof is a personal trainer and fitness coach who transformed her body and helps others do the same. In a new social media post, she reveals that a handful of habits were instrumental in her weight loss. “5 things I’ve done to lose 20lbs and keep it off for years,” she writes in the post.

Drinking Less Alcohol

You might consider putting down the bottle if you are drinking your calories. Dylan reveals that drinking less helped her lose more weight. “I worked through my relationship with alcohol - I had to break the habit of drinking multiple days on the weekend,” she said. There is another non-weight-related benefit. “This helped me lose lbs and lower a lot of inflammation in my body and face)” she says.

Walking More

Dylan also recommends walking. “A walk a day (move your body more) it’s that simple. We are not meant to sit all day. Outside, on a treadmill - get your steps in!” she says. How much should you walk for weight loss, according to science? A 2018 study published in Obesity found a link between walking 10,000 steps a day and weight loss and weight management. Other studies published by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in JAMA Neurology and in JAMA Internal Medicine also linked walking 10,000 steps a day to less dementia and less cardiovascular disease overall, with less heart disease, less heart failure, and fewer strokes.

Eating Consistently

It can be tempting to starve yourself to lose weight. However, Dylan points out that you need to fuel your body. “Ate MORE food consistently. Hear me out - when you’re eating 1,200 calories and falling off all the time you’re not going see results. Up your calories and find consistency with your food,” she says.

Strength Training with Purpose

Dylan points out that you should focus on quality over quantity in your strength training workout. “I train with purpose. My weight lifting is intentional - I push myself and challenge myself with the weights I use,” she says.

Focusing on Whole Foods

And finally, she cleaned up her diet. “I stopped hitting my macros with whatever food I could fit in. I choose to eat 90% whole foods everyday (I do believe in balance and I am a huge foodie - you CAN fit ‘fun’ foods in) but focusing on more clean foods helped me feel less ‘puffy’.” she writes.
