3 Proven Tips That "Helped Me Lose Belly Fat"

Her suggestions are easy to incorporate into any diet.

Karla_improvingwkarla20

Karla (@improvingwkarla) is a social media influencer on TikTok and Instagram who has amassed a massive following by sharing the diet and weight loss tips that helped her lose 15 pounds of fat in just three months. In one of her viral videos, she offers her followers three easy tips to help her lose body fat. “Tips that help me lose belly fat,” she says in the clip. We also asked The Diet Diva, Tara Collingwood, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD/N, ACSM-CPT, and a Board Certified Sports Dietitian, to weigh in on her tips.

Tip One: Increase Protein Intake

@improvingwkarla

Her first tip? “Get your protein up,” she suggests, offering a breakfast hack to do so. “If you usually have eggs in the morning, make some cottage cheese for an extra 20 percent of protein.”

RDN Agrees

“Protein is an excellent way to start the day and I recommend about 20-30 grams for breakfast, depending on gender, age, and activity level it could be even more,” says Collingwood. But, before you just automatically increase your protein, she suggests looking at what else you are eating with the protein. “If you don’t have any whole grains or fruits or veggies, then add that to complement the protein for sustained energy and a balance of nutrients,” she says.

Drink a Smoothie in Between Meals

“Tip number two, if you're always hungry, even if you've already had a meal, have a smoothie between meals,” she suggests. “I use a portable blender like this to help me out. It's nutritious and it helped me with binge eating.”

RDN Agrees

Smoothies can be a great snack, but they can also add up in calories very quickly, notes Collingwood. “Be careful with how big the smoothie is and try to keep it at about 200-250 calories for a snack, depending on total caloric needs for the day. Make sure there is some protein from plain greek yogurt or protein powder and some fruit for antioxidants and fiber.

And if carrying around a blender is too much work, don’t be afraid to use the ready to drink protein shakes that are around 150 to 170 calories and 25 to 30 G protein each.”

Get Your Steps In

Her final tip? Get your steps in. “Make sure you're walking at least 10,000 steps a day. Better than running, especially if you're just starting out. Best way to do cardio,” she concludes.

Walking is an excellent way to get moving, says Collingwood. “However, it is also good to get the heart rate up to discomfort level of exercise even if it is for short intervals.”

💪🔥Body Booster: Try to eat at least 20 to 30 grams of protein with every meal if you are trying to burn fat and build muscle.

You might think that the secret to losing belly fat is doing endless crunches a day. However, according to fitness experts, this is just a myth. Soraya (@project.s.lifestyle) is a certified macro nutrition and fat loss coach and TikTok influencer. Her goal is to help people get their “dream body” without “ditching” their favorite foods and bust myths surrounding weight loss. In one of her viral videos she reveals the three things that will help you lose stubborn belly fat.

1. You Don’t Have to Go to Extremes to Lose Belly Fat

@project.s.lifestyle

“Here's how you lose that stubborn lower belly fat that just hangs there when you pull your pants down,” she says in the clip. “Number one 60 sets a day right before bed. Number two, cut out all white carbs, white potatoes, white bread, pasta, things like that. Number three, one hour of cardio every single day,” she continues. “Now, these are things I see a lot of people doing to lose belly fat and lose fat in general, but it's not the most efficient and sustainable way to lose it.”

2. But, It Takes More Than Lots of Ab Work

She continues to tell her followers what will actually help you blast belly fat. “Weight loss essentially comes from being in a calorie deficit. So you can do all the crunches, all the ab workouts you want to do, but if your nutrition is not on point, you'll not see any results in your stomach at all,” she says.

3. 1. Be in a Calorie Deficit

The first thing you need to do to lose lower belly fat “is to be in a healthy calorie deficit, unique to you,” she says. Chris McMahon, a nutrition and fitness coach agrees that the “best way to actually shrink your stomach” would be to be in a consistent calorie deficit. “There's no way around it. People say that diets don't work. That's not true,” he adds.

4. 2. Strength Training

Woman training in gym room ready for fitness biceps exercisesShutterstock

Her second recommendation? “Focus on strength training,” she says. Several studies have found a link between resistance training and reduced weight circumference, aka, belly fat. Some good weight training exercises to tone your midsection include bicep curls, squats, lunges, and tricep kickbacks.

5. 3. 30 Minutes of Walking Per Day

Woman walking in the park with bottle water in summer health care concept.Shutterstock

And finally, she recommends “30 minutes of walking per day,” instead of 60. “Light movement doesn't have to be anything crazy,” she adds. If you don’t have time for a 30-minute walk, McMahon suggests taking 10 minute walks throughout the day. “A 10 minute walk is equal to a thousand steps. So if you think of it that way, it's like, “Oh, okay, I can take short little walk breaks.”

6. Finally, Have Patience

“Now, if you do this, you will see results, but for a lot of women, their stomach is the slower thing to go,” she says. “So you just have to be patient and trust the process.”

💪🔥Body Booster: Contrary to popular belief, you can’t flatten your abs by doing a lot of crunches. In order to lose belly fat, you have to be in a caloric deficit.

Karla, a social media influencer who uses the handle @improvingwkarla on TikTok and Instagram, has amassed a huge following by sharing the diet and weight loss tips that helped her lose 15 pounds of fat in just three months. In one of her viral TikTok videos she shares the three things that really made a difference in terms of blasting belly fat. “Three tips to help me lose belly fat,” she says in the short clip.

1. 1. Drink Sparkling Water

2. Here’s What Science Says About Sparkling Water and Hunger

Glass,Water,Sparkling,sodaShutterstock

Science is divided as to whether sparkling water helps you lose weight or makes you gain it. While some studies show that carbonated water keeps you feeling fuller for longer, one study published several years ago in the journal Obesity Research and Clinical Practice linked drinking carbonated water to weight gain due to the carbon dioxide that gives sparkling water effervescence. Scientists maintain that it has an effect on body chemistry, triggering a hormone known as ghrelin that can lead to overeating.

3. Amp Up Your Protein Intake

Next, she suggests amping up protein intake. “Tip number two, if you struggle with adding protein in your meals, just have your meals with a protein smoothie,” she advises. “It can be as simple as protein powder and water. So protein is better than no protein.”

4. Here’s What Science Says About Protein and Fat Burn

Balanced,Diet,Food,cooking,meal,carbs,proteinShutterstock

Science agrees that eating more protein can help you lose weight and burn fat. According to clinical trials, consuming more protein than the recommended dietary allowance not only reduces body weight (BW), but also enhances body composition by decreasing fat mass while preserving fat-free mass (FFM) in both low-calorie and standard-calorie diets.

“Tip number three, make sure you're walking at least 10,000 steps a day,” she says, adding that walking “is better than running, at least if you're starting,” she adds, calling it “the best way to do cardio.”

6. Here’s What Science Says About Walking 10,000 Steps a Day

Incline,Threadmill,,,Gym,Incline,Threadmills,walking,running,gym,exerciseShutterstock

Should you aim for 10,00 steps per day? A 2018 study published in the journal Obesity found a link between walking 10,000 steps a day and weight loss and weight management. Other studies published by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in JAMA Neurology and in JAMA Internal Medicine also linked walking 10,000 steps a day to less dementia and less cardiovascular disease overall, with less heart disease, less heart failure and fewer strokes.

DeAsia Green (@deasiagreenn) is a weight loss warrior and influencer who has amassed a TikTok following of over half a million people. She regularly shares videos revealing all of her tips and tricks on losing weight and burning fat. In one viral video she opens up about a few of the habits that enabled her to get a flat tummy. “4 things I did to lose stomach fat,” she writes in the clip.

Cardio

@deasiagreenn

it’s all about consistency 🤌🏽 @bloomnu

Exercise is the first habit that helped DeAsia blast belly fat. She specifies that “Cardio, especially sprint intervals,” were helpful. According to research, sprint intervals burn 40 percent more fat than HIIT workouts in 60 percent less time. Similar to HIIT, it involves running at a high speed for a period of time, followed by a brief rest, and then another sprint, and so on.

She Made Major Changes to Her Diet

DeAsia also made some major changes to her diet. “Stopped eating out every day and started eating whole foods,” she writes in the clip. She eliminated junk food, processed food, and sugar. Studies have found that the more meals you eat at restaurants, the higher your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and early death. And, one study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity found meal planning was associated with a healthier diet and less obesity.

Gym Workouts

Weight and strength training were also impactful in her fat loss. “Creating a gym routine structured around my goals and sticking to it,” she writes. According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

  • Develop strong bones
  • Manage your weight
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Sharpen your thinking skills.

Gut Health

She also prioritized digestion. “Started working to improve my overall gut health,” she concluded. There is actual research backing up that certain types of gut bacteria make it harder to lose weight.

One Final Tip? Sleep

The Diet Diva, Tara Collingwood, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD/N, ACSM-CPT, a Board Certified Sports Dietitian, adds one final tip. “I would also add getting 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep,” she suggests. “When you’re sleep deprived your hunger can be more intense and you turn to comfort food when you’re tired.”

TikTok influencer Andrew Holmes (andrewholmes79) is on a mission to educate people about how to FINALLY lose that pesky belly fat. Have you tried to reduce the belly bulge? Are you doing crunches and situps from dawn til dusk with no change in the stomach area? Are you beyond frustrated that no matter what, the belly fat won’t budge? You might be overcomplicating things. Here’s what Holmes has to say on the matter, plus real, expert-backed advice on how to get the abs of your dreams.

Sit Ups and Crunches All Day

@andrewholmes79

How to lose stubborn belly fat once and for all.

Holmes says to please stop doing endless crunches and situps if the only reason you are doing them is to get rid of belly fat. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that way. “To burn belly fat, you need 45 to 60 minutes of high-intensity cardiovascular activity (running, playing soccer or basketball, jumping rope, power-walking, etc.) on most days of the week,” medical weight management expert Karen Cooper, DO, tells the Cleveland Clinic. “You also need to reduce your intake of processed foods, fast foods and alcohol.”

Burning Belly Fat Specifically?

Holmes explains that once you start burning fat all over, eventually the fat on your stomach will burn off too. And it’s not just about hitting the gym, or eating well—try not to spend too much of the day sitting. “Staying physically active throughout the day as well as scheduling time for structured exercise may be even more important than diet,” say the experts at Harvard Health.

Pesky Genetics

Holmes makes the point that people are shaped differently—so your best friend, who might be doing the same diet and exercise, might lose fat from a different part of their body than you. That’s normal! "We know that women and men tend to store fat differently -- women have the ability to more easily store fat on the hips and legs, while men tend to accumulate fat around the abdomen to a higher extent," Mathias Rask-Andersen, Ph.D., tells Science Daily. "This has been attributed to the effects of sex hormones such as estrogen. But the molecular mechanisms that control this phenomenon are fairly unknown."

Yes, Abs Are Made In the Kitchen

Holmes makes the crucial point that if you don’t have control of your food, belly fat is going nowhere. One good way of simplifying your diet is by food prepping. “Food prepping, or preparing meals in advance, is a key strategy for maintaining a healthy diet, especially for those with busy lifestyles,” says celebrity trainer Kollins Ezekh. “It ensures that you have healthy meals ready, which can prevent the temptation to opt for less nutritious, convenient options. Food prepping can help you stick to your nutritional goals, save time during the week, and can also be cost-effective as it reduces the likelihood of purchasing last-minute meals out. Additionally, it allows for better portion control, which is crucial for weight management or achieving specific fitness goals.”

Slow and Steady Wins the Abs

,Couple,fit,abs,muscle,beach,ocean,sea, fitnessShutterstock

As with all health and fitness goals, slow, steady work is key to a successful outcome. That means there are no shortcuts. “Be patient,” Holmes advises. Focus on good nutrition, stress management, don’t smoke, stay active, and be aware of how many calories you are taking in. Your abs won’t appear overnight but they’re under there, just waiting to make their debut.

TikTok influencer Tara Hall (@tarahallfitness) knows all too well the struggle to get rid of belly fat and develop beautiful, strong abdominal muscles. As with all exercises, there is a right way—and a wrong way!—to go about reaching those fitness goals, and so much misinformation that not only will NOT help shift the tummy fat, it might even encourage it (noooo!). Hall’s advice is sensible, and you know it’s legit because the method will cost you nothing. Here’s what she has to say.

Sit Ups and Crunches

@tarahallfitness

Struggle to lose lower stomach fat? Heres how 🙃 #lowerstomachfat #stomachfat #flatstomach #losefat

Hall makes the point that endless situps and crunches will unfortunately not torch stomach fat. Why? Research shows spot reduction is a myth—you can’t just focus on losing fat in one area of the body. “Getting rid of belly fat involves a combination of diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes,” says vegan fitness expert and trainer Kollins Ezekh. “Cardiovascular exercises, such as running, cycling, and swimming, can help burn overall body fat, while strength training exercises, such as weight lifting, can help build muscle and improve metabolism.”

Related: Katie Austin Flashes Washboard Abs and Reveals 5 Things She Does to Get Her “Mojo Back”

Lots of Cardio

Side view of two attractive sports women on running track. Girls on treadmillShutterstock

Hall says cardio alone won’t magically shift the belly bulge—other factors are important, as it’s remarkably difficult to out-burn excessive calories. “Focus on a balanced diet rich in whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats,” Ezekh says. “Limiting sugar and refined carbohydrates can also help reduce belly fat.”

This Is the Way

Smartphone and calories calculator concept. Hand holding smartphone and take photo of chicken grill, avocado, chickpea, cheese and lettuce in white salad plate. In vintage toneShutterstock

“The only way you are going to lose stomach fat is by being in a calorie deficit,” Hall says. Her advice might be boring (where’s the quick fix we’re looking for?), but it is the foundation of any successful fat-loss program. “Popular fad diets may promise you that not eating carbohydrates (carbs) or eating a pile of grapefruit is the secret to weight loss. But it really comes down to eating fewer calories than your body is using if you want to lose weight,” says the Mayo Clinic.

This Is Important Too!

Of course, other factors also impact belly fat—for example, stress. Stress causes cortisol, and cortisol is linked to belly fat. So while you’re working out and eating right and being mindful of calories, pay attention to stress levels and learn to manage them. “Practices such as meditation, yoga, or regular physical activity can help manage stress,” Ezekh says.

Bye Bye, Belly Fat!

Sleep also impacts belly fat—poor sleep can help pack stomach fat on, and excess weight causes even worse sleep. Yikes. "Our findings show that shortened sleep, even in young, healthy and relatively lean subjects, is associated with an increase in calorie intake, a very small increase in weight, and a significant increase in fat accumulation inside the belly," says Virend Somers, MD, PhD, for the Mayo Clinic.

"If you are tight, if you're stiff, if your body is not very flexible and you'd like to improve your mobility, you're in the right place," says Dr. Jared Beckstrand, PT, DPT. No extreme poses or complicated movements—just simple, effective stretches designed specifically for people who struggle with flexibility.

Dr. Beckstrand is a Doctor of Physical Therapy specializing in making mobility accessible to everyone. Through his practical approach to stretching, he's developed this 8-minute routine that addresses all major muscles and joints without requiring any equipment. His emphasis is on comfort over forcing difficult positions: "It's important that you should keep your stretching very comfortable. I want you to push to the point where it starts to get painful, but I don't want you to push into pain."

Start With Lumbar Rotation For Lower Back Relief

Begin by lying on your back, as Jared instructs in his post: "Lay on your back with your right knee bent. With your left hand, grab the outside of your right knee and pull that over to your left side until you get a good comfortable stretch through your lower back and through your hip." Hold for 30 seconds, then repeat on the opposite side.

Simple Hamstring Stretch For Tight Legs

"Left leg goes straight, both hands cup right behind the right knee, and then straighten that knee out until you get a good stretch right up here in the hamstring," Jared demonstrates. This straightforward movement targets one of the most commonly tight areas in the body.

Easy Hip Opener With Piriformis Stretch

For this hip-focused movement, Jared explains: "Cross your right leg over your left knee, grab your left knee and pull it up towards your chest until you get a good stretch in that right hip." Switch sides after 30 seconds for balanced flexibility.

Hip Flexor and Hamstring Double Stretch

"Put your right knee on the ground. Take a big lunge step with your left foot, scoot your weight forward onto that left foot," Jared guides. This combination stretch targets both your hip flexors and hamstrings efficiently, making it perfect for people with limited time.

Seated Rotation For Upper Back Mobility

Moving up the spine, Jared demonstrates: "I'm going to cross my left leg over my right, my right elbow comes to the outside of my left knee just until I get a good stretch." He notes that this stretch often provides satisfying relief in the upper back region.

"This is one of my favorites for the entire back," Jared shares. The position is simple: "Come onto all fours. Sit your bottom down onto your heels until we get just a good stretch all through the back, through the lats. Tuck your chin into your chest and just sink into that stretch."

Upper Back Extension For Better Posture

This dynamic stretch targets your upper back and chest. "Place your fingertips to the back of your head, bring your elbows together and fold forward," Jared instructs. "Then we're going to open everything up, look up towards the ceiling, separate your elbows out, feel a good stretch through your chest."

Gentle Neck Stretch For Upper Body Relief

Conclude with neck mobility: "Left ear over towards your left shoulder. With your left hand come up to the opposite side of your head and apply just a gentle over pressure till we get a good stretch through the right side of the neck," says Jared. Repeat on both sides.

As Jared emphasizes throughout this routine, the key to success is keeping each stretch comfortable and consistent. Her first tip is to exercise. “Resistance movement 4-5x a week,” she recommends. “Any type of movement where you are putting resistance on your muscles is perfect! This could be weights in a gym/at home, Pilates, CorePower yoga (my obsession), barre, etc.!”

3 High Protein Meals Per Day

Next up she recommends 3 high protein meals a day. “Making sure you’re getting AT LEAST 25-30g of protein into each of your meals is super important and will help with overall blood sugar which will THEN HELP with cravings + weight loss!” she writes.

Plus, 1 to 2 High Protein Snacks Per Day

\u200bLexi wellnessbylex

She also suggests snacking. “1-2 high protein snacks a day: your snacks being protein based rather than carb based is so so important. These are the types of snacks that will ACTUALLY keep you full/do what you need them to do!” she explains.

10,000 Steps Per Day

Don’t forget to get your steps in, specifically “10k steps every single day,” she says, “yes, 7 days a week. This may seem like a lot but I promise with time and consistency, you can absolutely build up to this + it’ll be a breeze! For me this looks like walking for an hour and a half or so depending what speed I’m going at.”

Low Calorie/Low Sugar Alcoholic Beverages

If you are going to drink, do it healthily. “Low calorie/sugar alcoholic beverages,” she says. “I still enjoy alcohol and I’m not at a place in my life where I feel the need to cut it out yet. That being said, I keep it very very simple and stick to low calorie + no sugar added drinks. Vodka soda with extra lime is my go to! Ditch the vodka cran/Red Bulls and thank me later.”

Volume Eating

\u200bLexi wellnessbylex

She strongly suggests volume eating. “Guys this is a game changer if your eyes tend to eat first!!! Sometimes when we look at our plates/it doesn’t look like enough food to us, we tend to over eat or go for seconds. And listen, nothing wrong with going for seconds but if your goal is to lose weight, you need to be in a calorie deficit. SO- adding in extra veggies + protein to your meals will be super helpful for this!” she says.

Favorite Foods in Moderation

Her last tip? “Enjoying my favorite foods in moderation,” she says. “I’m not giving up chocolate, a good burger, brunch with the girls, NO THANK YOUUU! Not realistic for me (& most people). If I know I’m going out to pizza with the girls, I will make sure the rest of my day consists of lots of protein + veg.” And if you enjoyed this article, don't missI’m a Nutritionist and Here Are 25 Weight Loss Truths You Need to Hear.

She goes on to explain why the method works. “Why protein? It keeps you full, boosts your metabolism, & helps you burn fat while holding onto that precious muscle,” she writes.

How Much Protein Do You Need?

How much protein do you need? “A good rule of thumb is 0.8 - 1g of protein per pound of your ideal body weight. So, if your goal is to weigh 140 lbs, you should aim for around 120-140g of protein a day. Simple, right?” she writes.

Here Is How to Spread It Out

Next, she goes on to explain how to spread it out. For breakfast, she recommends aiming for 30g of protein, “think eggs & Greek yogurt,” she says. “Lunch: Another 30g (grilled chicken or a protein-packed salad)” she writes. A great protein-fueled snack at 20 grams is a protein shake or beef jerky. For dinner, “Finish with 40g (steak, fish, or turkey burger)” she suggests.

And, This Is Why You Should Spread It Out

Why should you spread protein out instead of eating it all in one meal? “By spreading your protein throughout the day, you’ll feel fuller longer, crush those cravings, & hit your goals without even trying!” she explains.
