I’m a Dietitian and Here’s the Food Combo That Helped Me Lose 100 Pounds

Here is the unconventional way she seasons her food to lose weight.

Ilana_Muhlstein_nutritionbabe1

Everyone knows that swapping out unhealthy foods for healthier ones will help you lose weight. However, one nutrition expert says that using certain combinations of seasoning and spices can also lead to weight loss. Ilana Muhlstein, RD, is a mother-of-two, nutritionist, and weight loss warrior (@nutritionbabe) who dropped 100 pounds naturally. (She also just wrote a terrific new cookbook, Love The Food That Loves You Back.) In one viral video, she reveals a surprising hack that helped her control her cravings, eat less, and lose weight. We also asked The Diet Diva, Tara Collingwood, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD/N, ACSM-CPT, a Board Certified Sports Dietitian, to weigh in on her tactic.

She Says the Combo or Sugar, Salt, and Fat Is Addictive

According to Ilana, there is a reason why some food is addictive while other foods are easy to put down. “The secret why you can't put down that bag of Oreos or Doritos, the combination of sugar, salt, and fat,” she says in the TikTok video.

An Oreo Cookie Is an Example

She uses an Oreo cookie as an example. “When I was on my health journey, I discovered the food science industry and the source of addictive eating is this trifecta. You can even lick an Oreo cookie and taste that it's salty, which balances really well with the sugary fatty center,” she continues.

She points out that food companies do this to make money. “More addictive food equals higher sales for the food company,” she says. “I decided if they could do it to their food, I could do it to mine. Now I season all my lean proteins and veggies with this balance"—in the case of some chicken tenders, it looks like a mix of olive oil, dry cheese flakes and brown sugar—"and it really does keep me craving all the foods that make me feel good,” she says.

Try Fresh Herbs and Spices, Too

“I totally agree with seasoning your foods to make them tasty,” says Collingwood. “But that doesn’t mean it needs to be with sugar and salt or fat.” Like Ilana, she says enhance your food with fresh and dried herbs, which “can go a long way for seasoning,” she says. Another option? Lemon or lime juice “to provide tartness,” she says.

Or Hot Sauce

Another option? “Hot sauce has few calories and you only need a very small amount to have a big impact on flavor,” she says.

💪🔥Body Booster: Seasoning your food – whether it is with sugar, salt, and fat, fresh herbs, lemons, or hot sauce – will likely offer more satiation and less cravings to overeat than unseasoned foods.

As a registered dietitian who lost a hundred pounds and kept it off, I know the struggle of weight loss all too well. It started at a young age, with summers spent at weight loss camps and school years marked by yo-yo dieting. This cycle continued for years, leading me to a point where I was 215 pounds at just five feet two inches tall.

The constant battle with weight took a toll not only on my body but also on my self-esteem. But it was this very struggle that ignited my passion for nutrition and set me on a path to discover a sustainable way to lose weight. Now, as a Registered Dietitian with a Master's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, my ideas have worked for literally thousands of people, through my work as a nutritionist and best-selling author of You Can Drop It!, the book based on my successful 2B Mindset program.

Now, I’ve encapsulated those principles into my new cookbook, Love The Food That Loves You Back, featuring 100 recipes that serve up big portions and super nutritious food. Here's a sneak peek about how the foods can work for you—and a mouth-watering dessert-for-breakfast recipe at the end.

1. You Don’t Have to Give Up Great Taste to Lose Weight

,pan,pot,stove,kitchen,Cooking,Lunch,Preparing,Shutterstock

Love The Food That Loves You Back is filled with recipes that are not just healthy but delicious and satisfying. They reflect my journey and philosophy: you don't have to give up great taste to lose weight. In fact, I believe in eating high-volume, low-calorie foods that allow you to enjoy hearty portions without the guilt. These are the recipes that helped me transition from a lifestyle of takeout and fast food to one where I could still enjoy eating and see progress on the scale. In the cookbook, you'll find an array of recipes that cater to all meals of the day, for all members of your family. These recipes are the embodiment of my weight loss journey and my professional knowledge as a dietitian. They are designed to help you lose weight without feeling like you're on a diet.

2. How to Eat Food and Lose Weight

love_the_food_that_loves_you_back_book_coverPhoto: Gabriel Mendoza Weiss / Design: Elina Diaz

Losing 100 pounds was just the start of my journey. The real success has been in maintaining that weight loss and helping others do the same. Through my cookbook and the 2B Mindset program, I want to share the joy of eating well and living healthily. I believe that everyone deserves to love the food they eat and to love the way they feel. Here are the cornerstones of Love The Food That Loves You Back in a nutshell:

1. Embrace Healthy Foods and Transform Your Relationship with Food: You can shift from using food as a coping mechanism for emotional distress to celebrating it through healthy, delicious recipes.

2. Eat Smart, Not Less: I advocate for choosing nutrient-rich foods over merely reducing food quantity.

3. Prioritize Vegetables and Proteins: I emphasize the importance of incorporating more vegetables and proteins, often overlooked in the typical American diet.

4. Break Food Myths: Let's debunk the myth that tasty food is unhealthy and show how nutritious food can also be delicious.

5. Recognize the Holistic Impact of Food: Let's acknowledge the profound influence of food on overall health, including gene expression, microbiome, and brain chemistry.

6. Encourage Creative and Mindful Cooking: I hope to inspire creativity in the kitchen and promote mindful consumption with tools and methods for balanced serving sizes. I believe in offering a range of serving size suggestions to cater to different body types and needs.

7. Encourage a Responsive Eating Approach: Unlike other restrictive "diet" cookbooks, I recommend eating more if still hungry, focusing on vegetables and proteins, and introduce the “More? Sure!” Model for smart filling up.

As you can see, the goal of Love The Food That Loves You Back is to help you enjoy your favorite foods and flavors while improving your eating habits and mindset. It’s about learning to crave nutritious foods, not just tolerate them. I want to inspire you to get creative in the kitchen with recipes that taste like comfort food and make you feel amazing. Remember, this is not a weight loss book, but a journey to love the foods that genuinely love your body back.

3. These Meals Were the Cornerstone of My Weight Loss Journey

Ilana_Muhlstein1Ilana Muhlstein

I'm thrilled to share with you the very meals that have been a cornerstone of my weight loss journey. The cookbook kicks off with breakfast – it's not just the first meal of the day; it's a celebration of a fresh start. I've packed in recipes like Chocolate Cream Rolls, Protein Oats, and a game-changing Tempeh BLT. Or try Seasonal Breakfast Boats, featuring the exotic tastes of papaya and sweet potato. Make them a morning ritual that'll have you feeling full, reducing those 11 am cravings.

But wait, there's more! You'll discover a world where veggies become your new best friends. I'm talking about dishes like Thai Peanut Hearts of Palm Spaghetti and Eggplant Sesame Noodles – meals that'll make you rethink everything you thought you knew about plant-based eating. And for my fellow crunch enthusiasts, the Roasted Wonders section is a treasure trove. You’ll make Eggplant Parm Fries and Air Fried Mini Bell Peppers. This isn't just about eating well; it's about loving every bite along your journey to health and happiness.

Do you want to lose 40 pounds in 3 months? Consider starting with a diet overhaul. Ciara Foster, AKA Ciara Honey Fit, is a social media influencer who creates a lot of wellness and weight loss content on her YouTube channel. “Today I am going to do a much, much requested and overdue video, how I lost 40 pounds in three months. I get this question so much,” she says. Here are the simple changes she made to burn fat fast.

Changing Her Diet Was Key to Her Weight Loss

Ciara reveals that she gained 80 pounds as a result of dealing with medical issues. “One of the biggest things that I did to lose 40 pounds in three months was to change my diet. I've eaten healthy for a while, but I got to a point where I was just so frustrated with my health and with the weight gain that I got to a point where it just seemed like I didn't even care as much anymore,” she says at the start of the clip.

She Met with a Nutritionist

“The first thing I did was to see a nutritionist. That nutritionist also was a doctor,” Ciara says. “She helped to create a meal plan for me that was very specific to what my body needed.” She said it is important to have a “specified meal plan for you that will help you to lose weight.”

“My meal plan consists of a balance of protein, carbs, and fats, with protein being my highest amount of nutrition that I take in with some fats and some carbs,” Ciara says, revealing that she focuses and organizes her meals around this. “That's the basis and the foundation of my diet and nutrition.”

Breakfast: Eggs, Turkey Bacon, Low Carb Tortillas, Almond Butter

Fried eggs and bacon cooking in a skilletShutterstock

For breakfast, she has eggs, turkey bacon, low-carb tortillas, “and I'll put almond butter in them,” Ciara says. “So I've got my protein, starch, and my fat.”

Lunch: Salads

For lunch, she has “Kardashian salad,” Ciara reveals, “because it reminds me so much of those big old salads that the Kardashians eat with two boiled eggs. Just because I'm not huge on meat, I'll eat mostly fish and seafood, but I really don't eat much like poultry or pork or beef. And I'll drizzle a little bit of salad dressing on it for my fat. And then I'll also have a starch, which lately I've been having Pirate’s Booty. I'm gonna start getting away from that and leaning more towards sweet potato and more like healthy starches instead of processed.”

Dinner: Protein and Veggies

Wild Salmon Patty Served with Brussels Sprouts and Mushroom HashShutterstock

“For dinner, I like to have protein and veggies,” Ciara continues. “My favorite right now is salmon and Brussels sprouts. I love Brussels sprouts and I love salmon. I make my own salmon. I just season it up really well, throw it in the oven, and it's actually really easy.”

She Added Cheat Days…

Reminder Cheat Meal Day in calendar with green pen. Close-up.Shutterstock

“One big thing that really helped me with my diet was that I used Monday through Friday pretty much eat healthy, and then Saturday and Sunday were like my cheat days,” she says. “What I started doing was narrowing myself down to one cheat meal per week. Really just being more strict about my weekends. That really can make a difference in the long run in terms of how quickly you're able to lose weight,” Ciara says.

And if you wanna lose weight quickly and drop the weight fast, you really, really have to limit those cheat days and those cheat meals. And reducing my cheat meals or cheat days to one cheat meal helped me lose the weight quicker,” Ciara says.

Eliminating Alcohol

“Something else that helped me to lose 40 pounds in three months was eliminating alcohol,” she says. “It was really, really hard for me because I am a wine person. Drinking is a social thing that affects the way that I interact with people at events that I tend not to and things like that. But if you want to lose weight quickly and drop the weight fast, then I definitely recommend eliminating or trying to cut down on your alcohol intake.” She set a goal for herself of two weeks, then a month, and then another month, and “ended up going the full three months without drinking.”

Meal Prepping

Meal,Prep,Asian,Style,Teriyaki,Sauce,Chicken,Meat,Balls,With,Broccoli,AndShutterstock

“Meal prepping was very, very integral in me losing 40 pounds in three months,” Ciara says. This helped her eliminate fast food from her diet and eating out. “I like to meal prep at the beginning of the week, and that way, I have all my meals for the week or a good portion of them, and it just eliminates that factor of always eating out or eating fast food or eating things that are not good for me,” she explains.

“When I was a hundred pounds heavier, my sushi orders were out of control. I always ordered the same fried foods, but I realized if nothing changes, nothing changes. Spicy tuna and crispy rice were my favorites, but I realized it was really that crispy bottom and creamy, spicy topping that I craved the most,” she says in the video. “I started ordering spicy tuna, wrapped in cucumber naruto rolls, which I still love to eat, but I've since upped my game by lightly pan frying some well seasoned tofu coated in a little starch to get that satisfying crunch. Not only is it delicious, but the added protein coming from the tofu makes me feel so satisfied afterward. Not to say I don't love me some good crispy rice, but I'm a volume eater, so this meal works better for me so that I can feel good.”

High Protein Greek Salad

@nutritionbabe

Sometimes the fastest recipes are the most satisfying #healthyrecipes #healthyfood #healthylifestyle #nutrition #healthylunchideas #easyrecipe #saladrecipe #saladrecipes #vegetarian #highproteinmeals

“This is for the girl who has five minutes to make lunch,” she says about her high-protein Greek salad. “We always start with veggies, so I'm chopping up some cucumber. Cut it small, so you have a piece of everything in each bite In the bowl. Tomatoes in the bowl, and a quarter onion, parsley, and mint. Give it a rough chop, a juice of lemon. You can avoid the seeds. I need a tablespoon of olive oil and hot cheese for protein because I don't know about you, but I am not grilling chicken in the middle of the day. Cottage cheese is salty enough for me, so I only use fresh cracked pepper. Mix it all together. A cottage cheese helps make it creamy. I laid it up with some multi-grain crackers, and I love to eat it like this,” she says, scooping it up on the cracker.

Another go-to meal of hers is tofu and cabbage stir fry. “My husband and I got married 12 years ago. We were so broke. We were straight out of school and still trying to figure stuff out, and with a tiny budget, I had to get creative. We both need protein to feel full, so a cup of noodles for dinner was not going to cut it. Salmon and meat were off the table, and chicken was only for special occasions, so we ended up eating tofu for dinner at least three times a week. I used to buy two blocks of tofu for $5, which was the best-value protein I could find. I tried to make it in a lot of different ways so we wouldn't get sick of it. One of our go-to's was a tofu cabbage stir fry. It doesn't get any more healthy on a budget than this, and I'm still making it 12 years later,” she says, showing off the delicious-looking meal made with carrot and red cabbage.

In another video, she reveals that instead of French fries made with potatoes, she makes turnip and celery root fries. “I'm going to turn you on to your new favorite veggies. I get it; green salads might not be your thing, but let's make a bowl of fries. I still love some potatoes, but they're predictable. Why be basic, and you can be sensational?” she asks. You Don’t Have to Cut Out Foods You Love to Lose Weight

“Losing fat sucks if you cut out all the foods you love, so I don’t. Understanding how your body and nutrition works will help you realize that you truly can have your cake and eat it too,” she adds in the post. “Losing fat doesn’t mean that you have to cut out foods you enjoy. It just means you need to be more intentional about how much of ANY food you are putting into your body.”

Breakfast: Spinach & Cheese Microwave Scramble

She starts with her go-to breakfast, a scramble she makes in the microwave with spinach and cheese. The ingredients are:

  • 1 egg
  • 185g eggwhites
  • Handful baby spinach
  • 28g reduced-fat shredded cheese

Lunch: Creamy Chicken Taco Pasta

For lunch, she has a creamy chicken taco pasta made with regular pasta. Here are the ingredients:

  • 4oz air fried chicken tenders
  • 1 serving of angel hair pasta
  • 1/2c cottage cheese blended until smooth w/ 2T taco seasoning
  • 28g reduced-fat shredded cheese

Snack: Peanut Butter Drops

For a protein-packed snack, she eats peanut butter – only she freezes it to make peanut butter drops. She uses 32g peanut butter “frozen into little pieces,” she explains. “Omg! Why have I never thought about peanut butter drops!” one of her followers commented.

Dinner: Cotton Candy Protein Icecream Creami

For dinner, she eats dessert! She takes one scoop of Cotton Candy protein (@cleansimpleeats brand) and adds 10 oz vanilla Carbmaster milk and ten white fudge-covered pretzels. “I can definitely get on board with a cream for dinner,” one of her followers commented.

This Totals 140 Grams of Protein

“This has me eating 140g of protein a day, so I’m not hungry,” she says. “I’m satisfying any cravings I have by just… eating them within my macro targets.” Why should you focus on eating enough protein? According to clinical trials, consuming more protein than the recommended dietary allowance not only reduces body weight (BW) but also enhances body composition by decreasing fat mass while preserving fat-free mass (FFM) in both low-calorie and standard-calorie diets.

Keep Food Simple

In another post, she reveals a few things that are keeping you from achieving weight loss success. The first, “That is really a waste of your brain space when trying to lose weight,” she says, starting with healthy recipes. “I used to spend So much time trying to find ‘healthy’ recipes, going to the store for the weird ingredients it called for, making the recipe, and then figuring out how to track it in my macros. Waste. Now I just use simple foods that take me <15min to put together and are easy to track and be consistent with, even when I’m busy,” she writes.

Focus on How Much You Eat, Not What

She also notes that oftentimes, it’s not what you are eating but how much of it. “There are also no certain foods that will help you lose fat and tone up. When I stopped focusing on which foods and started focusing on how much, that’s when I got lean,” she explains.

Stop Trying to Be Perfect

She also stresses the importance of progress over perfection. “I used to be either all in or all out. That made me continuously lose my results and start over. I had to make a drastic mindset shift. I couldn’t keep thinking of my fitness as a “program” I needed to stick to, but a lifestyle that I’d need to change and develop new habits. Now free meals are in the plan, and I enjoy cookouts and going out to eat, and never feel like I’m starting over,” she explains. Are you ready for your 2025 makeover? Dawn Parsons is an influencer in her 40s who regularly shares her tips and tricks for healthy living. In a new post, she reveals the habits responsible for her 2024 glow-up. “7 months ago, I was feeling the most sluggish and unmotivated I had in a long time! My cravings were off the charts and I felt (and looked puffy) I wasn’t working out, and just couldn’t shed a pound!” she writes. Here is precisely what she did, including her “game-changing” walking hack.

She Used a Weighted Vest

What is the most impactful change she made? “I added a weighted vest to my 3.5 mile daily walking routine 7 months ago and it has been a GAME CHANGER!” she writes. “I started with an 8lb vest and just moved up to the 12lb.”

She Started Taking a Cortisol Cocktail

Next, she changed up her supplement regime. “I started taking my ‘Cortisol Cocktail’ which boosts your metabolism, gives you all day energy, supports healthy cortisol levels, suppresses your appetite, helps lift brain fog, supports weight loss and weight maintenance,” she writes.

She Amped Up Her Protein Intake

She also amped up her protein intake. “I’ve focused on 100+ grams of PROTEIN EVERYDAY,” she says. According to clinical trials, consuming more protein than the recommended dietary allowance not only reduces body weight (BW), but also enhances body composition by decreasing fat mass while preserving fat-free mass (FFM) in both low-calorie and standard-calorie diets.

She Started Lifting Weights

Strength training was also instrumental in her makeover. “Lifting weight 3-5x a week,” she writes. According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

  • Develop strong bones
  • Manage your weight
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Sharpen your thinking skills.

The Habits Offered So Many Benefits

“I started doing these 4️⃣ things consistently and here’s what changed,” she says.

• less inflammation

• lost weight

• more energy

• better sleep

• more muscle tone

• leaning out through my middle

• less sugar cravings

• brain fog lifted.

She Also Drinks Hot Water

In another post, she reveals some other habits she added to her daily routine, starting with drinking hot water “every morning or before meals,” she writes. According to her, benefits include hydration, digestion (“less bloating!), circulation, weight loss, “to kick start your metabolism,” detox (“hot water raises your body temp, which releases sweat and toxins”) and stress, because “hot water can improve central nervous system function which can give a sense of calmness.”

And Gets Outside

Another healthy and helpful habit? Getting outside. She claims that benefits include both mental and physical health, vitamin D, and cognitive improvement.

Ice Dunking

Ice dunking is the last habit she added. Benefits include skin tightening, increased circulation, reduced redness, swelling, and puffiness, and instant face glow. And if you enjoyed this article, take advantage of these20 Superfoods for People Over 50.

Are you trying to lose weight but not achieving the desired results? Stella Q Rivers is a weight loss coach who is “helping driven women drop 10-30+ lbs, master food, & finally feel in control,” she writes in her Instagram bio. She lost 40 pounds and has managed to keep it off for a decade. “I went from 165lbs to 115lbs & kept it off for 10 years. My biggest REGRET? Making these 5 mistakes,” she writes in an Instagram post.

Mistake 1: Kept on Trying to Diet

Her first mistake? “I Kept on trying to diet,” she reveals. “The more I dieted, the bigger the tire around my waist got & the scale crept up that I avoided getting on it. The #1 predictor of weight GAIN is dieting.”

Mistake 2: Believed the “Fat and Funny Friend” Story

Her second mistake? “Believed my ‘I’m the fat & funny friend’ story,” she reveals. “You are who you say you are. If you’re playing the role of the fat friend, you are her. What role do you play in your family (the ‘ugly duckling’) & friend circles and HOW much weight are you keeping on your body right now because of it?” she writes.

Mistake 3: Believed “Progressionals” Over Her Body

Her third mistake? She believed “professionals” over her body. “Between dieticians, nutritionists, coaches, hypnotherapists, Jenny Craig consultants, you name it. I did it & trusted them,” she explains. “When you trust OTHER people more than yourself, you will fight your weight because you won’t *trust* yourself. Yes, get informed BUT take what you need & leave the rest.”

Mistake 4: Gave Into Every Craving in the “Name of Not Binging”

Some people will tell you to lean into cravings so you don’t overindulge. But she disagrees. Giving into every craving in the “name of not binging” was her fourth mistake. “Because of dieting, I became a binge eater. Through healing that phase of my life I was told ‘honor your craving or else you’ll binge.’ Again, listening to professionals, FEARING food & my body and gaining more weight. It didn’t feel good. When you give into every craving, you will have a weight problem & food will have the power over you.”

Mistake 5: Worked Out Too Much

Her fifth and final mistake was working out too much. “Running 7+miles a day for a thigh gap, doing HIIT workouts 6 days a week= working out like an a**hole. This contributed to the binging & feeling out of control with food, skyrocketed weight gain & avoiding the scale,” she says. “I love running & love a good HIIT session every now & then but I love listening to my body more. Result? 40+lbs down. Your relationship to yourself is the pathway to your weight loss.” And if you enjoyed this article, don't missI’m a Nutritionist and Here Are 25 Weight Loss Truths You Need to Hear.

Miranda Forrest is a fitness coach for corporate women. “I help corporate women own their fitness journey w/o sacrificing their career, wine nights, or fav foods,” she writes in her Instagram bio. In a new social media post, she reveals her tactics for getting rid of a flabby midsection as soon as possible. “If I were to wake up tomorrow and gain 20 pounds of belly fat…here’s what I would do to lose it in 4 months as a busy corporate girl,” she writes.

You Don’t Have to Go to Extremes

You don’t have to go to extremes to blast belly fat. “It can seem super confusing and frustrating trying to lose weight, but it doesn’t have to be. 5 years ago I would have tried low carb, HIIT classes, running, and maybe it would have worked for a bit, but the progress always stopped,” Miranda writes.

These Science-Backed Methods Will Keep Your Body From “Adapting to the Stimulus”

“My body was adapting to the stimulus I was giving it. Here’s how to avoid that adaptation and how I would lose those 20lbs after learning the science behind losing body fat and toning,” she continues.

Lift Weights

Lifting weights is the first thing you need to do. “Start resistance training,” she recommends. “None of this light weight lifting, though. Heavy weights with continued reps and weight increases to avoid adaptation.”

Track Macros

You also need to stay accountable when it comes to your diet. “Start tracking macros,” she says. “Ensure you’re eating the right foods to lose body fat and maintain lean muscle.”

Start a Calorie Deficit

To lose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit. “Start a calorie deficit - I’d make sure I’m in a calorie deficit of 500+ calories per day to lose around 1lb per week,” she writes.

Do Low Intensity Cardio

And, do some cardio. “Start low intensity cardio - I’d increase my steps and add in low intensity cardio to help ensure I was in a calorie deficit for the day,” she says.

She Eats 2300 Calories Per Day

In another post she reveals details about her own routine. “Instead of avoiding carbs, cake and running for hours and hours each week, here’s exactly what I’m doing to maintain 19% body fat and stay lean this winter,” she said. “I eat 2300 calories daily, 150g protein, 255g carbs, 80g fats. I never skip my bagel in the morning and ensure I can have a sweet treat before bed.”

She Walks and Lifts Weights

She also makes sure to get her steps in. “I aim for 10k daily steps to ensure I’m getting activity in (my desk treadmill is the only way I make this possible),” she writes. “I lift 3 times per week (non of those “strength training” classes bc that’s a waste of time imo) and get 1-2 days of 30-45 min of cardio for heart health.”

She Meditates and Journals

She also gets her zen on. “I take the first 30 minutes of my day to meditate, journal and stay off my phone (way more important than you’d think for the mental),” she says.

She Gets Rest and Takes Time for Self-Care

And, she allows her body the chance to regenerate. “I start my bedtime routine around 7:30pm so I can be in bed reading by 8pm and lights out at 9pm,” she says. “I also make time for self care and socialization — we NEED to spend time with the girls in order to be our best selves.” And if you enjoyed this article, don't miss12-3-30 Walking Method: 20 Proven Tips to Lose Weight Faster.
