40+ Mom Loses 70 Pounds in a Year With These 4 Simple Steps

One weight loss warrior and coach reveals how keeping it simple can lead to fast results.

Kacy_Allensworth_the_Calorie_Deficit_Queen1

Do you want to lose weight but aren’t sure where to start? Kacy Allensworth, aka the Calorie Deficit Queen, is a social media influencer and “forever fat loss coach for women over 40.” On her various social media platforms, she reveals all her secrets to losing over 70 pounds and helping other women achieve their goals. “I was not always the calorie deficit queen. I was the former dieting yo-yo queen. I tried Weight Watchers, keto, intermittent fasting,” she says in the clip.

“In 2020, I hit my highest weight, and that's when I decided I needed to dig into the principles of nutrition, do things a little differently,” she says at the start of a viral clip, revealing the steps she took to drop weight fast. “I will uncover the first steps taken, not just for success, but for sustainable weight loss.”

First Step: Calculate Your Calorie Deficit with Your Goal Weight

The first step? Calculate your calorie deficit. “I'm going to cover two different ways that you can calculate your calorie deficit. The first way is to decide what your goal weight is and let's say your goal weight is 150 pounds. You're going to multiply your goal weight by the number 11.

Multiplying 150 times 11 gives us 1,650 calories, so that would be your calorie deficit,” she says. “This method is really just the simple method. It doesn't take into account your age, your gender, your activity level, or any of that.”

Or, Use an Online Calculator

“The second method that I recommend is visiting an online calculator, and when you visit the website, you'll enter in your gender, height, weight, and age,” she instructs. “It will ask you what your activity level is. I like to underestimate my activity level. You don't have to input your body fat percentage, and once you hit calculate, it will give you your total daily energy expenditure for maintenance calories. This is not your calorie deficit,” she reminds.

“You will take that number and subtract 500 from it to get your calorie deficit. The reason we subtract 500 is because one pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, and a shortage of 500 calories times seven days a week equals 3,500 calories or one pound of fat per week. Either one of these methods is a great way to begin eating in a calorie deficit, and you might find that one method gives you a discrepancy of a few hundred calories over the other method.”

Choose the More Sustainable Deficit

“Choose the calorie deficit that is most sustainable for you. You will know, after two weeks of eating at that deficit, whether or not this is successful or sustainable. I also do not recommend recalculating or calibrating your calorie deficit. Once you lose weight, lowering your calorie intake even further will have negative effects on your metabolic rate. So we want to avoid that,” she says.

Second Step: Use Three Tools to Be In a Deficit, Starting with a Food Scale

“There are three tools that you will need in order to be both accurate and consistent in being in a calorie deficit,” she continues.”The first tool is a food scale. You'll need one in order to accurately measure the food that you're eating because most people underestimate the amount of food they're eating and, therefore, underestimate the amount of calories they're consuming. The best way to be in a calorie deficit is to be accurate and know that you're in a calorie deficit by measuring your food.”

Second Tool: Bathroom Scale

“The second tool you'll need is a bathroom scale,” she continues. “You're going to need this so that you can periodically weigh yourself and track your results. I personally recommend to my clients that they weigh themselves daily, track their weight, and focus on what happens throughout the week. Don't focus on a single day of weight gain because no one loses weight. Linearly focus instead on the overall trend.”

Third Tool: Calorie Tracking App

“The third tool is to use a calorie tracking app,” she says. “Two that I recommend are MyFitnessPal and Lose It. This makes it easy to track your calories and know where you're at throughout the day. Make sure you're using all three of these tools consistently in order to stay in a calorie deficit.”

Third Step: Set Your Water Goal

The third step is setting your water goal. “There are various protocols to set your water goal. One of the ones I like to use is taking your body weight, dividing it in half, and drinking that many ounces of water daily. So if you're 200 pounds, you would drink 100 ounces of water per day,” she says. “Let me also say that if you do that calculation and it seems unreasonable to you or not sustainable, then do not start with that many ounces of water per day. Instead, start with what does seem reasonable to you. You're not drinking any water at all. You might start with 42 ounces of water per day. If you're drinking a little bit of water, you might start with 70 ounces of water per day. Make sure that you set your water goal to an amount that will be easily reachable because when you see yourself successful with that, you will then slowly begin to increase that water goal.”

What Counts?

Can you count coffee, tea, and seltzer as water? “I personally do not count coffee as water,” she says. “Here's what I tell my clients about the other options. If your tea doesn't have calories and sugar in it, then go ahead and count it as water. If you want to use a low-calorie Crystal Light flavoring or mayo in your water, go for it. If that's going to get you to drink your water, then add the flavoring because that will be more sustainable for you. If you wanna drink seltzer water, as long as there are no calories or extra sugar, go for it. You have to remember that when we set goals, we want this to be successful and sustainable for you,” she says.

Fourth Step: Set Your Step Goal

The last step is setting your step goal. “Just like setting your water goal, again, you want this to be sustainable for you. We all know it's great to get in 10,000 steps per day, but let me tell you that when I was at my heaviest, my very first step goal was 7,000 steps per day. Set a goal that is reasonable for you and a goal that you will most likely reach and be successful at. It took me about four to five months to work up to 10,000 steps per day,” she says.

Use These Steps and Walk Toward Success

“Knowing your calorie deficit, using the correct tools to be accurate and consistent with tracking your calories, setting a water goal, setting a step goal, and following through on both are all the very first steps to successful and sustainable weight loss. I want you to know that you too can be successful with weight loss, and it can be sustainable for you,” she concludes. More For You

Woman Lost 40 Pounds at 61 by Making These 4 Habit Changes

Are you struggling to lose weight after 60? According to an expert, a few habit changes can be game-changing. Ilene Block is the founder of Silver and Strong, a coaching company that specializes in helping women over 50 get into the best shape of their lives. She lost 40 pounds at 61 (and 55 pounds altogether) by making a few simple changes to her routine. “At 61 I was holding most of my weight in my hips and lower belly until I made these 4 changes to my daily habits,” she writes about the Instagram video. “Are you like me and have a hard time losing weight from your hips and lower belly? These foundational changes to your daily habits are the keys to being able to lose that weight and keep it off,” she adds in the caption.

Make Sure You Are Eating Enough

Her first suggestion? Make sure you are eating enough. “Many women of my generation (50+) grew up eating as little as possible to be skinny. I now know that the key is to eat as much as possible of healthy foods to fuel my body,” she writes.

Protein: “Aim for 1 gram of protein per lb of goal bodyweight,” she says.

Complex Carbohydrates: “Eat your largest carb meals before and after your weight training,” she says.

Healthy Fats: “These are more limited since they have 2.5x the cals as protein or carbs, but are important for overall health,” she writes.

Lift Heavy Weights

Next, make sure to lift heavy weights, “heavy for you,” she says, “to achieve muscle hypertrophy. “Most women don’t lift often enough (4-5x a week) or heavy enough to get the maximum benefits from weight training,” she continues. “The goal for women 50+ is building muscle and bone strength which can become an issue after menopause.”

Move Your Body Throughout the Day

Her third habit has to do with movement, specifically moving your body throughout the day to “get the benefits of NEAT,” she writes. ”NEAT stands for nonexercise activity thermogenesis,” she says. Examples include taking a walk, doing housework, and gardening. “Moving throughout the day can give you more benefits in terms of raising your overall calorie burn for the day than a half hour of cardio exercise.”

Prioritize Your Mental Health

Her last healthy habit is taking time to care for your mental health and mindset. “Change your mindset, change your life! At 50+, we are often unaware of our own limiting beliefs. You CAN do this! Awareness is the first step to changing your internal dialogue and how you talk to yourself,” she says. “Be willing to make yourself a priority and honor your boundaries.”

Be Patient

These habit changes won’t rear results instantly. You need to be patient, she says. “These changes take time, consistency and focus. Start with one and add the others over time and imagine where you will be a year from now.” And if you enjoyed this article, don't miss I’m a Nutritionist and Here Are 25 Weight Loss Truths You Need to Hear.

Indya Ago Lost 120 Pounds by Learning How to Have a “Balanced” Approach to Food

@indyaagos

Something I tell my clients when they first start coaching with me is that in order for these results to be sustainable we have to create balance. when I first started my weight loss journey, I used to restrict myself so much, I would demonize so many different kinds of foods that diet culture had brainwashed me, and into believing were the reason why I wasn’t able to reach the results I was looking for. Which just led me to cycles of binging, and creating a very unhealthy relationship between nutrition and my body. Through proper education on macronutrients, I was able to heal this relationship. And this is how I help my clients and maintain their goals as well. Education is power. WIEIAD DEETS: 💚 breakfast: protein, pancakes, egg, white scramble, turkey bacon 💚 snack: fruit, salad, and protein smoothie 💚 lunch: birria tacos + veg 💚 dinner: seafood boil Babe, if you’re ready to finally create a lifestyle transformation that’s sustainable while still eating all of the foods that you enjoy, I would love to work with you. She “Started Slow” and Learned “Self-Trust”

@indyaagos

If you wanna lose 80 pounds next year, I’m gonna tell you exactly how to do it! No gatekeeping the secret to success here. The number one thing that you need to get clear on, is the amount of time it’s going to take you to achieve your goal, the amount of effort required for you to get there, and, of course, why it’s so important to you. Setting a realistic expectation for yourself, while also simultaneously connecting with your why is the first step to create the foundation. You need to be successful through 2024. When you understand that this journey is going to take time, it’s going to require sacrifice, it’s going to require you stepping so far out of your comfort zone, that you may be paralyzed by fear at times. But being okay with the discomfort. Surrendering to knowing that in those moments of uncertainty, in those moments of insecurity, and discomfort, are facilitating growth. Connecting with knowing that, allowing yourself to grow, is what is going to help you reach your goals. And not only reach your goals, sustain those achievements. Baby, 2024 can be your year, and the first thing that you need to do, is get your mindset right. Know why you’re on this journey, know what you need to do to get from point A to point B, and set yourself up for success. Start building the mindset, habits, and routines into your daily life now in order to be successful 2024. and if you’re ready to take the next step, you’re ready to invest in yourself. I’m now accepting applications for January. The link is in my bio let’s get to work!🤘🏽 #weightlosstransformation #weightlosstips #weightlossjourney #weightlossgoals #weightlosscoach #weightlosshelp #weightlosschallenge #fatlosstips #fatlossjourney #nutritiontips #mindsetcoach #newyearsresolution #newyearnewme #nutritioncoach #fitnesscoach

In another video, Indya reveals another tactic that helped her lose so much weight. “You got to start slow,” she says. “If you approach this from an all or nothing mentality, you are only setting yourself up for failure. A big part of this journey is regaining self-trust. You are so used to letting yourself down. The way that you build trust with yourself again is by following through with the promises that you've made to yourself.”

And Took a Deep Dive Into Her Failed Attempts at Weight Loss

Another thing she did is “going to require you to dig deep,” she says. “We need to figure out what your main excuses or your repeated point of failure chances are. You've been stuck in the same exact cycle, repeating the same narratives as to why you haven't been able to be successful in the past. If your story is that you never have any time, then we need to figure out why you're not prioritizing making time. People make time for what's important to them. If the story is that you are overwhelmed and you have no idea where to start, then it is time to reach out for help so that you have a plan of action as well as guidance.”

Raven Norwood Lost 165 Pounds By Cutting Processed Foods From Her Diet

Raven_Norwood_rowwithraven1rowwithraven/Instagram

Raven Norwood, 28, of Huntington Beach, California, started her weight loss journey at 212 pounds and has managed to drop down to 155 pounds, losing 165 pounds in two years. In an interview with Body Network, she explains that she used to eat food containing several dyes, fast food, and packaged food with GMOs, too much MSG, and preservatives. While she didn’t eliminate “any specific food groups because balance is the key to longevity,” she did cut the above from her diet and started cooking her own meals “as much as possible.” Creating healthy relationships with all food groups is so important when it comes to keeping the weight off, she stresses. “Balance is key, so, if I want a cookie here and there, I eat the cookie… no biggie!”

She Also Amped Up Her Water Intake

Raven adds that “lots of water” keeps her hydrated and feeling full. According to the Mayo Clinic, hydration is important for a variety of reasons. Water helps get rid of waste through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements, keeps your temperature normal, lubricates and cushions joints, and helps protect sensitive tissues.

She Fell in Love with a Boutique Fitness Method

Raven_Norwood_rowwithraven4raven.grl/Instagram

Raven also encourages finding a fitness form that you love. She discovered rowing at her local Row House. “I love how boutique and specialized gyms are getting more recognition! When I first found Row House, I had never seen a gym dedicated to rowing,” she says. “And on top of that you get floorwork exercises, group fitness and the wonderful community that comes along with it! I think a lot of people would benefit from boutique gyms.”

She Took Progress Pictures

Raven_Norwood_rowwithraven6raven.grl/Instagram

Progress photos were also an important part of Raven’s weight loss journey. “Sometimes your mind will play tricks on you, and make you feel like you haven’t done as much as you have,” she says. If she feels discouraged, she will look at her “Day 1” photo and it will provide instant motivation. “Take photos because your mind will play tricks on you, but those photos won’t,” she says.

Dils Less Lost 50 Pounds by Not Drinking Coffee on an Empty Stomach

Dils Lee (@dilshealth) lost 50 pounds by making a few simple lifestyle habit changes, which not only aided in weight loss, but were a game-changer in her overall health, especially with her inflammation and hormonal imbalance. One of the first changes that she made? “I stopped drinking coffee on an empty stomach and started making my breakfast look like this,” she said. “Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can lead to bloating, nausea, and anxiety, and it can also raise your cortisol levels, which can negatively impact ovulation weight and hormonal imbalances.”

She Also Switched From HIIT to Low Intensity Workouts

You don’t have to do HIIT workouts to lose weight. The second change that she made “was stopping all high intensity training while I was losing weight,” she said. “I found that I harbored a lot of inflammation in my face, arms, body, stomach, and legs everywhere.” Instead, she opted for lower intensity training. “Basically, by switching to lower intensity workouts, I've found that my waist has drastically come in. My stomach is much more flat, and I'm actually building a lot of tone and muscle in my arms and legs,” she says.

And, She Prioritized Sleep

“The fourth change that I made is that I introduced a healthy sleep routine,” Dils reveals. “My routine includes using supplements like magnesium and then not using my phone an hour before bed. Prioritizing sleep will help your body recover after physical activity. It'll also help with hormone regulation, metabolic regulation, stress and emotional wellbeing.” What are the health benefits of sleep? According to the Sleep Foundation, getting enough z’s is a mood booster, promotes heart health, regulates blood sugar, improves mental function, restores your immune system, helps relieve stress, and aids in weight loss.

He does “harder” push ups, he says. “It's not enough to just do as many as you can and do them fast. Alexandra Lost 40 Pounds by Eating the Same Meals Every Day

Online fitness coach Alexandra (@alexx.fitt) personally lost 40 pounds by eating the same meals daily. “For 1-2 months I ate the same meals every single day why? Because I was confused I didn’t know what to eat or where to start so I ate the same thing everyday,” Alexandra confesses in the caption of her video.

She Also Walks 10,000 Steps a Day

In another video she reveals that walking 10,000 steps a day was also key. “I weigh around 150lbs so walking 10k steps burns an extra 300-400 calories a day without spending hours on the stair master,” says Alexandra. “Walking can be done anywhere you don’t have to get fancy gym clothes you can literally walk in your pjs,” she adds. And, it helps regulate hunger. “Walking is not an extremely difficult exercise and it can help regulate your appetite hormones and reduce feelings of hunger,” she says.

David Tuckfield Lost 60 Pounds EMS Workouts

David_Tuckfield7David Tuckfield

David Tuckfield, 61, dropped 60 pounds and reduced his body fat by 23 percent in 16 months by incorporating electro muscle stimulation (EMS) workouts into his routine, which he discovered at BODY20. “I was very skeptical when I first tried the EMS workouts. I was shocked after my demo workout how much I felt a difference,” he told Body Network. “For me, the amazing thing about the EMS workouts to me is that I can actually feel or sense my muscles. That was something that I had never experienced. At first I could feel them only during the workouts, but now when I exert myself I can discern which muscles are engaged. I don’t have huge or impressive muscles, but that I am more in-tune with the muscles I have. It is a good feeling to feel your muscles engage when you do an activity.” Another “great thing” about the workout “is that you really get a full workout (or better) in 20 minutes,” he says.

He Also Set Long-Term Goals

David_Tuckfield5David Tuckfield

He also started looking at weight loss as a long-term goal. “Don’t think short term. Think of it as a very long journey,” he suggests. “You will plateau, and you should just be comfortable with that. If you don’t stress out about the plateaus, you will eventually work through them.” Daily weigh-ins also helped him. “If you’ve gained weight, ask yourself what you did yesterday that would have made you gain weight. Usually the answer is obvious,” he says.

Google, TDEE calculator. From there, put in your information. I'm gonna tell you exactly how many calories you need to eat. I ate about 1600 to 1800 calories daily, just depending on my activity level for the day. If I did two workouts that day, I would eat closer to 1800. If I had a more sedentary day, I would eat closer to 1500 to 1600.” She also followed a meal plan. “I have a seven day meal plan available at the top of my profile. It just makes it really easy when you're going to a grocery shop, when you're first starting out, when things are structured, it's gonna make it a lot easier to follow and just to stay consistent, not skipping breakfast, especially if we're exercising.”

Are you in your post-menopausal stage and struggling to lose weight? Ilene Block is the founder of Silver and Strong, a coaching company that specializes in helping women over 50 get into the best shape of their lives. In fact, she herself lost 40 pounds at the age of 61 (and 55 pounds altogether) by making a few simple changes to her routine. “I totally changed my body composition at 61 by changing these 2 simple things,” she writes across a recent viral Instagram video. “Can it be that simple? Yes it can!” she added in the caption.

She Changed Her Approach to Diet

Many people think not eating or eating much less is the key to achieving a dream body. But the opposite can be true. “Eat as much as possible to fuel your body (not as little as possible to be skinny),” says Ilene in her post.

She Changed Her Approach to Exercise

Another game changing thing she did? She changed her approach to exercise. “Lift heavy weights 4 to 5x a week (Heavy for YOU),” she says in the post.

She Used to Yo Yo Diet

“I spent 40 years yo-yo dieting - eating as little as possible - and focusing on doing more cardio that weight training (and never heavy enough),” she continues in the post. Here’s what I changed and what you can start doing TODAY to make a difference in how you look and, more importantly, how you feel.”

She Follows These 3 Eating Rules

She went on to change the way she ate and followed these rules. First, she eats “at least 100g of protein spread evenly throughout the day,” she says. “Eat your biggest carb rich meals right before and after your weight training,” is her second rule. And her third? “Track your macros - if you are not eating at least 1800 calories a day, you likely need to do a reverse diet to rev your metabolism before attempting to lose fat,” she says.

She Weight Trains and Does Some Cardio

She also changed her exercise focus. “Weight train 4 to 5 days a week - lifting heavy weights (heavy for YOU). Most women don’t like heavy enough so they don’t get the benefits of muscle hypertrophy, which is what makes your muscles grow,” she says. “Cardio is important for heart health and can be a good tool to aid in fat loss when you are in a calorie deficit, but it should never replace weight training.”

Muscles Burn More Calories Than Fat

She also points out that muscles burn more calories than fat. “The more muscle you have, the more you can eat and maintain the same weight or lose body fat,” she says. “Weight training also helps keep your bones strong, which is especially important to us post menopausal gals. Strong bones and muscles allow us to maintain our overall strength and fitness and independence as we age.”

Here Are Some More Tips

“Changing how you eat and move can seem overwhelming, but if your goal is healthy aging, both are necessities. Start slow and remember these mantras,” she says.

  • Consistency, not perfection
  • Discipline, not motivation
  • Comparison is the thief of joy

“You are not too old; it is not too late to get in the best shape of your life starting today,” she concludes. And if you enjoyed this article, don't miss I Hit 60 and These 15 Anti-Aging Foods Keep Me Fit and Feeling 20 Years Younger.

“Here's how long it's going to take you to lose weight. I lost 40 pounds and here's what I did and how long it took me,” she says in the video, revealing that her weight loss journey first started in 2020. “I think around that time for a whole year I did every single diet, every single workout, every single meal plan, and nothing worked. Nothing would actually help me lose weight.” However, in January 2021, she learned the secret to losing weight fast. “Instead of following a freaking diet, I basically started to make healthier choices every single day,” she said in the video. It “all started with walking and a schedule,” she continued. “I made a plan of what time I'm going to eat and what I will be eating. I stuck to that schedule,” she added.

2. She Saw Results Within the First Month

There is scientific evidence supporting the benefits of meal planning. Studies the more meals you eat prepared away from home, the higher your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and early death. And, one study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity found meal planning was associated with a healthier diet and less obesity. Then, from January 2021 on “I literally walked every single day for six months straight,” she said. “There were like two days that I missed. Maybe it took me about five, six months to lose 35, 40ish pounds, but I saw results within the first month.”

3. She Lost 50 Pounds in 6 Months

In a recent Instagram video, she got specific about her steps (and also revealed that she lost 50 pounds in six months). “Hear me out walking seriously changes your life, I was able to lose 50lbs in less than 6 months by walking 10k steps a day!” she captioned the post. A 2018 study published in the journal Obesity found a link between walking 10,000 steps a day and weight loss and weight management. Other studies published by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in JAMA Neurology and in JAMA Internal Medicine also linked walking 10,000 steps a day to less dementia and less cardiovascular disease overall, with less heart disease, less heart failure and fewer strokes.

4. Exercise Shouldn't Feel Like Punishment

@alexx.fitt

It was more during my journey that i realized #weightloss #mindset

Something else that was helpful for Alex was shifting her mindset. She explains that prior to losing weight, she viewed running as “a form of punishment,” but now she feels like exercise is something she is “so grateful for,” she wrote in another TikTok. “I'm grateful I get to go on a run and move my body, and I do that kind of stuff because it genuinely makes me feel good. I don't do it as a form of punishment. I'm like, I'm going to feel so good after I run. It's going to clear my mind,” she added.

5. Exercise Make Her Feel Good

alexxandra_fitt4alexxandra.fitt/Instagram

“I wake up anxious sometimes. So going on a run or even doing a morning workout, I'm like, oh my goodness, this helps me so much. So that's the kind of mindset shift you got to have when you're trying to lose weight. It's a lifestyle. You're doing this stuff because it feels good for you, not because you have to.” Alex is spot on about using exercise to quell anxiety. The American Psychological Association dubs it a “healthy stress reliever,” and several studies back up the claim.

Brenda Lizard is a weight loss influencer who goes by the TikTok handle @brenda.lizard. In two of the many viral videos discussing her massive and rapid weight loss — she lost 40 pounds in just under four months — she reveals a few simple tricks that helped. And, a few of them might surprise you.

1. Brenda Decided to Change Her Lifestyle After Learning She Had Pre-Diabetes

@brenda.lizard

Brenda prefaces the video by confessing that she is not a professional. “This is just what I did and what worked for me,” she said. She also revealed that she “decided to change” her lifestyle for health reasons, namely after she got a breast reduction and discovered she had pre-diabetes during the blood work. “So obviously I had to make a change for my own health,” she said.

2. First, She Changed Her Diet

ChickenGrill,grilled,bbq,breast,meat,proteinShutterstock

The “biggest thing” for Brenda was changing her diet, because after getting her breast reduction she couldn’t exercise for two months. “I couldn't lift anything over 15 pounds, so it was all my diet,” she said. Instead of going on a “specific diet like keto or whatever” she went on a calorie deficit, “which basically you're counting your calories.” She calculated how much she needed, inputting her age, weight, and height, and then figured out how many calories she would need to cut to lose one pound a week, which came out to 1,670 calories per day. For breakfast she ate overnight oats or an egg spinach omelet. “I love cottage cheese and cottage cheese is what's gotten me through a lot,” she added. For lunch she would eat tuna salad, chicken wraps, and “just regular chicken salads with a side of something.” She still ate out on occasion. “So if I were to go to Wingstop, I would still mess up some wings, but instead of getting regular fries, I'd get sweet potato fries. If I went to In-N-Out, I would still get a double double, but I'd get it lettuce wrapped,” she revealed. “I never felt miserable throughout this whole entire process just because I would eat what I wanted. And at home, I don't necessarily count my calories If I make my food at home, only if I'm going out to eat, that's when I do start counting my calories,” she added.

3. Second, She Started Doing Cardio

Hikers,Walking,Mountains, outdoors, outside, rural, walking, exerciseShutterstock

Once able to start doing cardio, she started seeing the most weight loss, “and don't think it's extreme cardio,” she said. “I've always been an early bird, so I've always woken up six in the morning to eight in the morning, the latest. And I would go get up, and then I would go on runs, jogs, I take my dog out. We bonded a lot throughout this entire process, and I would go on hikes.” A 2018 study published in the journal Obesity found a link between walking 10,000 steps a day and weight loss and weight management. Other studies published by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in JAMA Neurology and in JAMA Internal Medicine also linked walking 10,000 steps a day to less dementia and less cardiovascular disease overall, with less heart disease, less heart failure and fewer strokes.

4. Third, She Joined a Gym and Used the StairMaster

StairMaster, steps, stairs, treadmill, gym, machine, exercise,Shutterstock

She also got a gym membership at LA Fitness, “and I just go there to use a StairMaster,” which she says “is a must.” Recently, the "25-7-2" StairMaster workout went viral, with people boasting about the weight loss benefits. It involves jumping on the stair-climbing machine, setting it to level 7, and climbing for 25 minutes. Does it actually work? "Any new stimulus will burn more calories at first, but your body will always adapt to whatever stimulus you're doing," Katie Kollath, ACE CPT and cofounder of Barpath Fitness, previously told our sister website Eat This, Not That! "So, if you want to continue to burn more calories after a couple of months doing this workout trend, you will either need to increase activity elsewhere or do the StairMaster workouts for longer."

5. And Fourth, She Started Lifting Weights

@brenda.lizard

Replying to @Brenda DM me on insta or comment if you need clarification!!! #gymtok #weightloss

Once cleared by the doctor, she started lifting weights. And, for anyone who is starting to lift, she warns against putting too much emphasis on the numbers on the scale, as “muscles are heavier than fat.” To warm up, she would jog to the gym or go on the treadmill for ten minutes. She would also do more cardio – a little over a mile of walking, jogging, and sprinting – post lifting. Then, she would take a quick water break and “hit up” the StairMaster, her “favorite” workout. “I go on it for 15 minutes. I'd range from level four to six, sometimes seven,” she said. While first “scared” of the dumbbell area, she says she learned how to lift by watching tutorials on her phone or getting help from other people at the gym. “No shame at all. I didn't know what I was doing at first, and there's times that I still don't know what I'm doing, but I just go and I say YOLO, and I watch my little TikTok tutorials on how to do my form and stuff,” she concluded.

💪🔥Body Booster: Incorporating a StairMaster workout into your routine can help you lose weight. Just make sure to continue increasing intensity as time goes on.

Do you want to lose almost one pound weekly for 8 weeks? It’s doable, without having to make significant changes, according to one fitness pro. Lauren Simpson is a fitness trainer and influencer with over 1.8 million Instagram followers. In a new social media post, she reveals exactly how she is achieving her goal of losing 7 pounds in the next 8 weeks. “Here’s exactly what I’ll be doing,” she writes.

Get Into a Calorie Deficit

The first topic to tackle is nutrition. She plans on consuming 1,650 calories and 132g protein per day. “I definitely embraced the foods over the festive season, so I'm looking forward to tidying my diet up now. 80% whole foods/ 20% soul foods. Tracking my intake so I keep accountable & have more data to then be able to make changes,” she writes. “I’m excited to be entering my first structured calorie deficit phase since having a baby!”

Strength Train

Next, she will be doing strength training workouts. “Aiming for 3-5 days a week weights training. Mum life means being able to adjust & be okay that things aren’t going to be 100% to plan. May introduce cardio later…will see how my body responds,” she says.

Walk

And you will also find her walking. Her daily step goal is 6,000. However, many experts recommend 10,000 for weight loss.

She Lifts Heavy Weights

In an interview with Simply Shredded, Lauren revealed she is “passionate” about the gym. “That’s when I decided to dedicate more time to getting stronger and developing my overall physique and I made the switch from being a ‘cardio bunny’ to lifting heavy weights! During that time, I would go on social media to look at girls who competed in Fitness competitions,” she said.

She Does Minimal Cardio

“A workout routine focusing primarily on weight training with minimal to no cardio works best for me. My style of training is a cross between powerlifting and bodybuilding. I am an ectomorph body type and I find it quite hard to maintain muscle mass. Lifting heavy has really helped to stimulate my overall muscle growth, particularly with my lower body,” she added to the publication

She Counts Macros

Lauren elaborated on her diet to Simply Shredded. “I follow a blended approach between macros and clean eating,” says Lauren. “I know my exact macros and I have a clean meal plan to hit these macros. When planning my meals, I also keep things like nutrient timing in mind too especially around my workouts.”

Here Is What She Eats in a Day

Here is what Lauren eats in a day

  • Meal 1: 5 ounces Egg Whites, 3 ounces Oats and 1 tablespoon Honey
  • Meal 2: 1 scoop Protein and 1 cup Blueberries
  • Meal 3: 3 ½ ounces Barramundi and 9 ounces Sweet Potato
  • Meal 4: 2 ½ ounces Chicken Breast, 5 ounces Mixed Vegetables and 1 ½ ounces Walnuts
  • Meal 5: 3 ½ ounces Turkey Mince, 3 ½ ounces Pumpkin, ¼ cup Baby Spinach Leaves and 2 ounces Avocado
  • Meal 6: 1 scoop Protein and ¼ cup Almonds.

She Keeps No Sweets in the House

“Sushi and sweet potato fries are my current obsession! I often crave sweet things, so to handle those cravings, I simply do not keep any sweets in the house! (Laughs) I remove all temptations and I save the sweets for when I go out on a ‘cheat night,’” says Lauren. Are you experiencing unexplained fatigue, brittle nails, or slow-healing wounds? Your body might be waving red flags about protein deficiency. Dr. Jin W. Sung, a prominent health expert with nearly 500,000 YouTube subscribers, reveals seven critical signs that could indicate you're not getting enough protein. Understanding these signals could be the key to unlocking better health, stronger immunity, and improved overall wellness. Read on to discover if your body is trying to tell you something important.

The Hidden Language of Protein Deficiency: 7 Warning Signs

"Most people don't realize how many different ways their body signals protein deficiency," says Dr. Sung. These seven key signs can help you identify if you're getting enough protein in your diet. Pay attention if you experience any of these symptoms, especially in combination.

Sign #1: Struggling to Build or Maintain Muscle

"Muscle loss or inability to gain muscle despite working out is a major red flag," warns Dr. Sung. If you're hitting the gym regularly but not seeing results, or noticing muscle weakness despite regular activity, your protein intake might be insufficient. For optimal muscle health, Dr. Sung recommends 1.2 to 1.4 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, with athletes needing up to 2 grams per kilogram.

Sign #2: Brittle Hair and Weak Nails

Notice your hair breaking easily or nails becoming increasingly brittle? Dr. Sung explains that these changes often signal protein deficiency, as hair and nails are primarily made of protein. Regular monitoring of your protein intake is crucial for maintaining strong, healthy hair and nails.

Sign #3: Slow-Healing Wounds

"When you get a cut and it doesn't heal well or in the expected time frame, that's a clear sign," Dr. Sung notes. Protein plays a crucial role in tissue repair and wound healing. If small cuts or bruises take longer than usual to heal, your body might need more protein to support its repair processes.

Sign #4: Weakened Immune System

"These people will be more prone to infection or become currently sick," Dr. Sung explains about protein-deficient individuals. If you're catching every cold that comes around or infections seem to linger, your immune system might be struggling due to inadequate protein intake.

Sign #5: Sleep Issues and Mood Changes

Experiencing anxiety, depression, or insomnia? According to Dr. Sung, these could be unexpected signs of protein deficiency. Studies show that protein is essential for producing neurotransmitters that regulate mood and sleep patterns.

Sign #6: Bone Health Concerns

A doctor with a stethoscope, in a medical uniform in a clinic, a traumatologist analyzes a leg fracture. X-ray of the knee. Ultrasound. Injury of the leg in the knee joint. OsteoporosisShutterstock

"People don't realize it's not just calcium and minerals in the bone. There's protein amino acids too," Dr. Sung emphasizes. If you're concerned about bone density or have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, increasing your protein intake might be crucial for maintaining bone health.

Sign #7: Constant Hunger and Cravings

While not directly quoted by Dr. Sung, research shows that inadequate protein intake can lead to increased hunger and cravings. Dr. Sung's recommended protein intake of 1.2 to 1.4 grams per kilogram of body weight can help maintain satiety and reduce unnecessary snacking.

Understanding Your Protein Needs

Dr. Sung breaks down the numbers clearly: "A 150-pound person needs at least 81.6 to 95.2 grams of protein per day for optimal health." For those with health challenges, he recommends increasing intake to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight, while athletes might need up to 2 grams per kilogram.

How to Check for Protein Deficiency

"Simple tests like CBC with CHE can show you if you have protein deficiencies," explains Dr. Sung. Key markers include BUN (should be 10-16), globulin (2.4-2.8), and hemoglobin levels. If you're experiencing any of the seven signs, consider asking your healthcare provider about these tests.

Solutions for Better Protein Absorption

Dr. Sung emphasizes that it's not just about eating more protein – it's about proper absorption too. "If you have hypochlorhydria or low stomach acid issues, you definitely want to increase hydrochloric acid along with some digestive enzymes to break down your protein appropriately," he advises. Consider protein-rich diets like ketogenic, paleo, or carefully planned vegetarian diets, depending on your specific needs and restrictions. He Recommends the 40-30-20 Method, First Starting Your Day with 40 Grams Protein

In another post, he touts the benefits of the 40-30-20 Method. “Start your day with 40g of protein. A breakfast smoothie with protein powder, berries, and almond milk or overnight oats with Greek yogurt and protein powder are great options,” he writes. According to clinical trials, consuming more protein than the recommended dietary allowance not only reduces body weight (BW) but also enhances body composition by decreasing fat mass while preserving fat-free mass (FFM) in both low-calorie and standard-calorie diets.

Next, Walk for 30 Minutes

“Walk for 30 minutes daily. Split it into two 15-minute sessions if needed. Walking boosts metabolism, reduces stress, and aids fat loss,” he says. A 2018 study published in the journal Obesity found a link between walking 10,000 steps a day and weight loss and weight management. Other studies published by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in JAMA Neurology and in JAMA Internal Medicine also linked walking 10,000 steps a day to less dementia and less cardiovascular disease overall, with less heart disease, less heart failure, and fewer strokes.

Finally, Lift Weights for 20 Minutes

“Dedicate 20 minutes to weightlifting 3-4 days a week,” he adds. According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

  • Develop strong bones
  • Manage your weight
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Sharpen your thinking skills.
