7 Minerals That Boost Your Weight Loss

These minerals can make a huge difference.

Minerals are essential for overall health and wellness but are especially important for weight loss and metabolism. Losing weight can be challenging enough without a person being undermined by mineral deficiencies. "Each one plays a role in hundreds of body functions,” Dr. Bruce Bistrian, chief of clinical nutrition at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, tells Harvard Health. “It may take just a very small quantity of a particular mineral, but having too much or too little can upset a delicate balance in the body.” Here are crucial minerals that may impact your weight loss journey.

Iron

Iron is important for weight loss—it’s very hard to get the right amount of exercise when iron levels are low. “Low iron may cause weakness and fatigue, resulting in decreased activity or exercise,” registered dietitian Brittany Michels tells Newsweek. “Any decrease in caloric expenditure may cause weight gain or make it harder to shed body fat. In addition, adequate oxygen is required to burn fat. Since iron is essential for oxygen transport, adequate iron levels best support a healthy metabolism."

Potassium

Food rich in potassium, top view with a small blackboardShutterstock

Bananas, nuts, and potatoes are all high in potassium. Potassium is crucial for metabolizing carbohydrates and synthesizing protein. “Potassium balances fluids in the body, helps to maintain a steady heartbeat and to make muscles contract, and may benefit bones and blood pressure,” says Harvard Health.

Manganese

Manganese is crucial for many functions, including blood clotting and healthy bones. Strong bones are essential for healthy aging and exercise. “Bone health is important for everyone, especially for older adults assigned female at birth (AFAB),” registered dietitian Maxine Smith, RD, LD, tells the Cleveland Clinic. “They are at the greatest risk for osteoporosis.”

Magnesium

Low magnesium can lead to fatigue, and can be dangerous. “Magnesium is an electrolyte that’s a key part of many bodily reactions that affect cellular function, nerve conduction and more,” says the Cleveland Clinic. “Your brain, heart and muscles rely heavily on magnesium to do their job.”

Chromium

Natural sources of chromiumShutterstock

Chromium is important for impacting insulin sensitivity, which affects weight gain. “Some evidence suggests that chromium supplements may help people with diabetes lower blood sugar levels,” says Mount Sinai. “People with diabetes either do not make enough insulin or cannot properly use the insulin that their bodies make. As a result, glucose or sugar builds up in the bloodstream.”

Zinc

Foods High in Zinc as salmon, seafood-shrimps, beef, yellow cheese, parsley leaves, mushrooms, cocoa, pumpkin seeds, garlic, bean, almonds, pine nut. Top viewShutterstock

Zinc is important for many things, including digestion, and can impact weight loss. “You don’t need much zinc, but it has so many benefits and can really affect how your body works,” registered dietitian Rachel Harrison tells Banner Health. “It plays an important role in several zinc-dependent enzyme systems such as those involved in digestion, wound healing and DNA and RNA production.”

Copper

Foods highest in Copper (Cu). Natural sources of mineralsShutterstock

Copper is very important for fat-burning. "We find that copper is essential for breaking down fat cells so that they can be used for energy," says Chris Chang, a faculty scientist at Berkeley Lab's Chemical Sciences Division, a UC Berkeley professor of chemistry and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. "It acts as a regulator. The more copper there is, the more the fat is broken down. We think it would be worthwhile to study whether a deficiency in this nutrient could be linked to obesity and obesity-related diseases."

💪🔥Body Booster: Many essential minerals can only be obtained through food, so eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Are you trying to blast belly fat with little success? Lindsay Huelse is a weight loss expert and trainer who specializes in helping moms over 30 get in shape. In a new social media post, she discusses what you need to do to drop inches off your waistline. “If I wanted to lose that last layer of belly fat (without stepping foot in the gym)...I’d become addicted to these 3 things,” she writes across the video. “Do these 3 things If You feel like you’ve tried everything—cutting calories, extra workouts, and ‘eating clean”’ and ever since having kids, the weight just isn’t coming off,” she adds in the post.

Eat During a 12-Hour Period

The first thing Lindsay recommends is eating during a 12-hour period. “Close your kitchen for 12 hours,” she says in her post. “This allows your body’s blood sugar and insulin (a fat storage hormone) to get back down to normal levels and allow your body to tap into stored fat for energy rather than sugar, hello fat burn.”

Why Intermittent Fasting Cane Be Effective

Why should you consider intermittent fasting? Intermittent fasting works by “prolonging the period when your body has burned through the calories consumed during your last meal and begins burning fat,” explains Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Prioritize Protein

Next, amp up your protein intake. “Prioritize protein at every meal,” she writes. “Aim for at least 25-30g of protein per meal! This is the missing piece if you want to build lean, calorie burning muscle!”

How Protein Helps Your Lose Weight

Why should you eat more protein? According to clinical trials, consuming more protein than the recommended dietary allowance not only reduces body weight (BW), but also enhances body composition by decreasing fat mass while preserving fat-free mass (FFM) in both low-calorie and standard-calorie diets.

Exercise More

She also stresses the importance of exercise. “Move more (without overdoing it)” she writes. “Short walks throughout the day (even 10 minutes) and aiming for 2k MORE steps than you usually take can make a HUGE difference. Workouts are actually only 5% of total calories burned… what matters most is OVERALL movement… like walking.”

Walking and Weight Loss

How much should you walk to lose weight? A 2018 study published in the journal Obesity found a link between walking 10,000 steps a day and weight loss and weight management. Other studies published by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in JAMA Neurology and in JAMA Internal Medicine also linked walking 10,000 steps a day to less dementia and less cardiovascular disease overall, with less heart disease, less heart failure, and fewer strokes.

Bonus Tip: Take Supplements

She also offers a bonus tip. “The right supplements can fill in the gaps and give you the boost you need. I like to think of the first three as the foundational “bricks” and supplements help fill in the cracks! My supplement stack has helped me (and so many clients!) manage cortisol, tone up, and support weight loss,” she writes. Do you want to lose 10 pounds by the holidays? Jenn Markwardt is a fitness and nutrition coach and founder of Flourish Nutrition, whose goal is “helping you lose 20lbs in a stress-free way. In a recent social media post, she reveals how to drop weight fast by making a few simple tweaks to your routine. “Maybe it’s your energy, maybe it’s an extra 10-20lbs that came out of nowhere, especially around your middle, or maybe it’s exhaustion and brain fog you can’t get rid of,” she writes in the Instagram post. “Here are the three️ things I (and my clients) would avoid if I wanted to drop fat and get my energy back.”

Stop Eating Healthy and Start Eating with Intention

New York - January 9, 2020: MyFitnessPal application on a smartphone. MyFitnessPal is a mobileShutterstock

Her first tip? Stop eating “healthy” and start eating with intention. “Track your food for a week (not forever, and you’ll be amazed at what you learn. It’s not about eating as little as possible; it’s about understanding how to build your pants in a way that leaves you full and satiated and helps your body lose fat without restriction and hunger,” she writes in her post.

Get More Focused with Exercise

Next, “stop doing random workouts and only relying on cardio,” she says. “Muscle is the key to lighting up your metabolism and helping you actually keep your results! You should be training intentionally in a progressive overload style (building in weights or reps each week) to optimize your results!”

Don’t Do It Alone

And her third tip is to “stop trying to go it alone,” she says. “Listen, things change as we age, but you are not broken. It’s not impossible to see results, but you have to do things differently than you did in the past, and it’s a heck of a lot easier when you have the support and accountability of coaches and other women just like you.”

Walk 8,000 to 10,000 Steps Per Day

The first habit is to get your steps in. She recommends “daily movement of 8-10k steps.” Why should you aim for 10,000 steps per day? A 2018 study published in the journal Obesity found a link between walking that amount and weight loss and weight management. Other studies published by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in JAMA Neurology and in JAMA Internal Medicine also linked walking 10,000 steps a day to less dementia and less cardiovascular disease overall, with less heart disease, less heart failure, and fewer strokes.

Amp Up Your Protein Intake

Next, amp up your protein intake. “30g of protein at each meal for satiation and preserving and building muscle,” she writes. According to clinical trials, consuming more protein than the recommended dietary allowance not only reduces body weight (BW) but also enhances body composition by decreasing fat mass while preserving fat-free mass (FFM) in both low-calorie and standard-calorie diets.

Also, Increase Fiber Intake

Also, she recommends amping up your fiber intake. “25g of fiber daily” is her suggestion. Why? “Fiber is key for balancing blood sugar and keeping you full, so you avoid mindless snacking,” she says.

Strength Train

In addition to getting your steps in, she recommends doing strength training to build muscle. Specifically, she suggests three 30-minute strength workouts a week “using our Flourish Fitness progressive overload program,” she writes. According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

  • Develop strong bones
  • Manage your weight
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Sharpen your thinking skills

Stress Management

Lastly, she stresses the importance of mental health. She explains that “stress management and finding and creating the time to prioritize” yourself is fundamental in getting in physical shape.

A Lot of Factors Impact Weight Loss

“And here’s why this works: your metabolism isn’t just ONE thing. There are a lot of factors, and your daily habits have the biggest impact on your metabolic health and hormones. You don’t have to do these things perfectly, but consistency (even on the weekends) matters for forever results,” she writes at the end of the post. Struggling to see results from your weight loss efforts? You're not alone. Whether you're just starting your journey or looking to break through a plateau, having the right strategies can make all the difference. Christine Hronec, founder and CEO of Gauge Girl Training, food scientist, and former national bikini competitor, shares her expert insights on accelerating your weight loss journey safely and effectively. Read on to discover seven proven tips that can help you achieve your goals faster.

Start Your Day with High-Protein Foods

"According to the International Journal of Obesity, eating a high-protein breakfast could help reduce cravings and lower your calorie intake throughout the day," Christine explains in her post. She emphasizes starting your day with foods like eggs, egg whites, turkey bacon, or protein shakes to create a positive nitrogen balance, which significantly impacts appetite control throughout the day.

Skip the Sugary Drinks

Soft drinksShutterstock

Research from the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences backs Christine's advice to eliminate sugary beverages and fruit juices. "Your body needs to burn through glucose and carbohydrates before it shifts over into fat loss," she notes. It takes approximately 20-25 minutes for your body to switch to fat-burning mode at rest, and sugary drinks only delay this process.

Drink Water Before Meals

"The Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that drinking water before meals reduced caloric intake and improved weight management," Christine shares. She recommends consuming between 2-2.5 liters daily as a minimum, though ideally aiming for a gallon (3.74 liters) for optimal results.

Increase Your Fiber Intake

Christine stresses the importance of soluble fiber, recommending at least 17 grams daily for women and 25 grams for men. "Fiber helps detoxify the liver of excess estrogens and hormones, helps remove excess cholesterol, and keeps you feeling fuller longer," she explains. Good sources include vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and avocados.

Add Black Coffee or Tea

According to Christine, studies in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition support caffeine's role in boosting metabolism and fat loss. However, she cautions that pregnant or nursing women, and those with hormone imbalances or certain health conditions should limit or avoid caffeine intake.

Focus on Whole Foods

"Nowhere in nature do you find high-sugar, high-carb foods combined," Christine points out. She advocates for building your diet around real, whole foods rather than processed alternatives. While you can lose weight eating processed foods in a caloric deficit, whole foods help you feel fuller longer and support healthier habits.

Prioritize Quality Sleep

Christine emphasizes that quality sleep is often underrated in weight loss. "Poor sleep can burn out your adrenals and cortisol levels, leading to hasty decisions and poor nutrition choices," she warns. Making sleep a priority helps maintain energy levels and supports better decision-making throughout your weight loss journey. A healthy metabolism is important not just for weight loss but for overall well-being. “Metabolism can vary greatly from person to person,” Linsey High, PA-C tells UnityPoint Health. “For example, two women who are the exact same height and weight can have completely different metabolisms due to many different factors.” While there is certainly a genetic factor to take into consideration, lifestyle habits can impact your metabolism for the better and the worse. Here are seven ways to boost your metabolism naturally, according to experts.

Weight Training

Gym and dumbbell weight training equipment on sport ,Healthy life and gym exercise equipments and sports concept ,copy spaceShutterstock

Lifting weights is a great way to boost your metabolism and get fit. “Strength training is a key component of overall health and fitness for everyone,” says the Mayo Clinic. “Strength training can help you manage or lose weight, and it can increase your metabolism to help you burn more calories.”

Good Sleep Habits

Woman sleeping in a bed in a dark bedroomShutterstock

Studies show not getting enough sleep can slow down your metabolism, encouraging the body to hold onto fat stores. "The primary problem in obesity is how fat tissue functions to store fat energy,” says Greg Shearer, PhD. “By storing fats quickly, fat tissues appear to shift fuel utilization away from fats and prioritize the use of sugars for fuel. Here we show evidence that sleep restriction exaggerates this process, conserving energy stores."

Exercise More

Focused woman performing barbell curls at gym, bathed in natural light. Gym workout routine.Shutterstock

A study from UT Southwestern Medical Center shows even a single workout can boost your metabolism for days, thanks to the impact of exercise on specific neurons. “It doesn’t take much exercise to alter the activity of these neurons,” says UT Southwestern neuroscientist Dr. Kevin Williams. “Based on our results, we would predict that getting out and exercising even once in a semi-intense manner can reap benefits that can last for days, in particular with respect to glucose metabolism.”

Don’t Skip Meals

Beautiful young sports people are talking and smiling while cooking healthy food in kitchen at homeShutterstock

Eat breakfast to help boost your metabolism—but opt for healthy, high-protein choices. “Our energy use slows overnight and is usually lowest in the early morning,” High tells UnityPoint Health. “Eating breakfast is an easy way to ‘wake-up’ your metabolism. People who don't eat breakfast often have several hours of slower metabolism compared to people who do eat breakfast.”

Manage Stress

Portrait of stressed young housewife in modern kitchenShutterstock

Stress can negatively impact your metabolism, so managing it through methods such as meditation or exercise is very important. “Your body does not know when a stressful situation will end,” says Penn Medicine. “To prepare, it saves energy by not burning as many calories, which can lead to weight gain. More commonly, people turn to — or away from — food as a way to help deal with stress. Your metabolism can change if you regularly eat large amounts of food or don’t eat enough or at all.”

Eat More Protein

Healthy Homemade Chicken Breast and Rice with BroccoliShutterstock

Protein helps rev your metabolism thanks to its higher thermic effect. “Swapping out high-carb foods for high-protein foods will increase the amount of energy the body uses to digest food, burning more calories in the digestion process alone,” High tells UnityPoint Health. “This is why paying attention to the nutritional content of our foods is so valuable. It’s also why junk food, which is typically high-fat and/or carb, is detrimental to our health.”

Move More

Sitting all day can negatively impact your metabolism. "So much of improving metabolism is understanding what it is you do with most of your time," endocrinologist Dr. Laila Tabatabai tells Houston Methodist. "If you're sitting in front of a computer for eight hours a day only to go home and sit in front of your TV for another two or three, that's certainly going to reduce your metabolic rate."

Green tea is considered a superfood for good reason—it has many health benefits, not least encouraging fat loss. “Green tea is exceptionally high in flavonoids that can help boost your heart health by lowering bad cholesterol and reducing blood clotting,” says Penn Medicine. “Studies show this type of tea can also help lower blood pressure, triglycerides and total cholesterol.” Here are seven incredible benefits of green tea for weight loss and overall health.

Stress Relief

Stress can undermine weight efforts by spiking cortisol levels. As green tea is a natural source of L-theanine, it can help manage stress and encourage fat-burning. L-theanine also helps with sleep quality, another factor that affects weight loss.

Lower Cholesterol

Studies show green tea may help lower LDL “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides. “The limited data available on green tea support a potential association between green tea and beneficial properties in relationship to risk factors for cardiovascular disease,” Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition at Brigham and Women's Hospital, tells Harvard Health.

Natural Fat Burner

Animal studies show green tea can help with fat-burning. “Our findings suggest that green tea in the absence of caffeine can enhance the effects of exercise," Joshua Lambert, associate professor of food science, tells Penn State. "The mice that exercised and had decaffeinated green tea extract had a more significant change in body weight, and they had better outcomes as far as lower blood glucose and lower plasma insulin levels. It looks like a combination of exercise and decaffeinated green tea enhances the body's ability to use energy that is taken in."

Caffeine and Metabolism

Green tea contains caffeine, which is known to help boost metabolism. “There have been quite a few studies that suggest higher blood concentrations of caffeine may be associated with a lower body mass index (BMI) and lower body fat mass,” Allegra Picano, RDN, tells Henry Ford Health. “One of the studies stated that a person who consumed twice as much caffeine as another had 22% more reduction in weight, 17% more reduction in BMI and 28% more reduction in body fat.”

Bone Health

Bone health is crucial for exercise, which helps with fat loss. Studies show regularly drinking green tea may help prevent osteoporosis. “Most people reach their peak bone mass around age 30. After that, bone remodeling continues, but you lose slightly more bone mass than you gain,” says the Mayo Clinic.

Our work is aiming to give people a new food-based tool to help manage their risk for metabolic syndrome or to reverse metabolic syndrome.”

Green tea contains a paltry 3 calories in 8 fluid ounces, making it a great choice as part of a weight loss diet. “Replacing high-calorie foods with lower calorie choices and cutting your portion sizes can help you cut calories and improve weight control,” says the Mayo Clinic. “For a successful — and lasting — weight management plan, you also need to increase your physical activity.”

20 Things to Avoid While on Ozempic

Ozempic can be highly effective for weight loss, but there are definitely some unpleasant side effects to contend with, as the makers of the drug, Novo Nordisk, warn about. Nausea, constipation, and stomach pain are common, but avoiding certain foods and behaviors can make a difference. Here are 20 things to avoid while on Ozempic, to make the most of the medication and encourage healthy weight loss.

Too Much Sugar

Different sugar on dark tableShutterstock

Added sugars, and sugary sodas, can spike blood sugar. Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic and Wegovy, recommends that people avoid sugary foods while on the drug. “If you are taking medication to lower your sugar levels, it is advisable to avoid excess sugar consumption,” Dr. Dina Peralta-Reich, MD, FAAP, FOMA, tells Parade. “Failure to watch what you eat and keep your sugar levels elevated may prevent you from seeing the intended results of the medication,” she shares.”

Ultra-Processed Foods

Pop,Tarts,Toaster,Pastry,processed,food,sugar2. Processed FoodsShutterstock

Ultra-processed foods can make side effects of Ozempic worse. “This medication slows down gastric emptying and the dense food will move much slower through your intestines, which can make you feel sick [and experience] nausea, vomiting, reflux and abdominal pain,” says Dr. Peralta-Reich. “Someone may not see the results they're looking for either.”

High-Fat Foods

Symbol of a public toilet, bathroom, bathroomsShutterstock

Foods high in saturated and trans fats can make side effects of Ozempic worse. Some people complain of diarrhea and stomach pains. “I’ve seen an almost dumping syndrome-like response in people taking GLP-1s when they eat simple carbohydrates and high-fat foods,” Dr. Shauna Levy, a specialist in obesity medicine and medical director of the Tulane Bariatric and Weight Loss Center in New Orleans, tells TODAY.

Sitting All Day

Staying active is important while on Ozempic. Regular exercise is not only important for health, it can prevent muscle loss. The goal should be fat loss, and getting strong.

Not Hydrating

Don’t forget to drink your water and stay hydrated. Drinking water can help with side effects of Ozempic, especially nausea. Ozempic.com recommends drinking clear or ice-cold drinks to combat any nausea and discomfort.

Too Much Alcohol

Avoid alcohol on Ozempic, experts advice. “One, it’s just empty calories. Two, it tends to make people make decisions that they otherwise might not make,” says Dr. Levy. “It could increase hunger, and the whole point of GLP-1s, or at least one of the points, is to decrease hunger. So it sort of negates their purpose.”

Be Mindful of Portions

Healthy diet plan for weight loss, daily ready meal menu. Close up Woman weighing lunch box cooked in advance, ready to eat on kitchen scale. scales, weighShutterstock

Ozempic keeps food in the stomach longer, so bigger portions can cause discomfort. “Understanding that overall portions are smaller on these medications, we want to optimize nutritional intake and consume the ‘best’ calories available,” obesity medicine physician Dr. Christopher McGowan tells TODAY. “The focus should be on lean protein, healthy fruits and vegetables, adequate fiber and adequate fluid intake.”

Be Mindful of Coffee

Man in the kitchen pouring a mug of hot filtered coffee from a glass pot. Having breakfast in the morningShutterstock

“Overall, coffee is perfectly fine to consume, but for some individuals can lead to stomach irritation,” says Dr. McGowan. “Therefore, I recommend drinking coffee in moderation, such as one to two cups a day. Patients should also be mindful of calorie-dense additives, like cream and sugar.”

Don’t Skip Meals

Unhappy Woman refusing to Eat her Pizza Dish in a Restaurant. Disgruntled customer not liking the meal sending it backShutterstock

It’s easy to skip meals when on Ozempic, but make sure you’re getting enough nutrition. Some people have even become malnourished as a result of not eating. “It’s never healthy to not eat,” Dr. Hwang said. Dr. Janice Jin Hwang, the division chief of endocrinology and metabolism at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine tells the New York Times.

Don’t Consider It a Quick Fix

Thoughtful mature man standing near mirror at homeShutterstock

Ozempic should be part of a long-term health plan. “It’s important to note that if you start taking either of these drugs for weight loss, your body may get used to it, establishing a new normal,” says UC Davis Health. This can cause your weight to plateau. Research has shown that if you stop taking Ozempic (or Wegovy), it's likely that you will gain back the weight you lost.”

Same Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bartender pours alcoholic drink into small glasses on barDon’t Drink as Much AlcoholShutterstock

Don’t continue an unhealthy diet and assume it’s ok because of Ozempic. “You can likely lose weight on semaglutide medications without changing your diet and activity behaviors, but these lifestyle changes will make the treatment more effective,” Richard Siegel, MD, tells the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. “Also, we don’t know if weight loss will have the same health benefits if one does not change their behaviors.”

Protect Your Health

Some doctors warn that taking Ozempic can make people complacent about their health. “It is important to remember that obesity is heterogenous, chronic and complex,” Vijaya Surampudi, MD, physician nutrition specialist and assistant director of the UCLA Weight Management Program (RFO), tells UCLA Health. “There is no cure for obesity. It requires lifelong treatment that’s not one size fits all.”

Carbonated Beverages

Ozempic slows down digestion, keeping food in your stomach for longer. This causes a feeling of fullness and some unpleasant side effects for some people like belching. Stick to still water as carbonated beverages can make stomach issues worse.

Long-Term Goals

If you plan on only taking Ozempic or Wegovy for a short while, it’s likely your weight will come back on. “In one trial of Wegovy, people regained about two-thirds of the weight lost within a year of stopping the drug,” Dr. Siegel explains. “Lifestyle changes can help maintain weight loss, but it’s unusual to maintain all weight loss once you stop any weight loss medication.”

Refined Carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates tend to spike blood sugar, which is exactly what Ozempic is meant to treat. You don’t have to cut these foods out entirely, but be aware it makes it harder for Ozempic to do its job. “Foods like white bread, white rice, crackers, or even cereals may seem like better choices than foods with added sugar, but refined carbohydrates still metabolize as glucose in the body,” Christine Fallabel, MPH, tells Diabetes Strong.

Watch Out For High Fiber

While many green vegetables are low GI, be careful about the fiber. “If you’re not used to eating a lot of vegetables, you may experience side effects such as bloating and gas, until your body has acclimated to eating a more fiber-filled diet,” Fallabel says.

Junk Food

Junk food—which you should be avoiding either way for weight loss purposes—often contains high levels of sodium. “Ultra-processed foods are high in sodium, saturated fats and added sugars, which contribute to a range of health problems,” Elizabeth Ko, MD, and Eve Glazier, MD, tell UCLA Health. These include an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, lowered immune response, certain cancers, dementia and early death.”

Spicy Foods

Ozempic can cause acid reflux due to slow digestion. Spicy foods can make acid reflux worse, experts warn. However, if acid reflux is not an issue, people can probably enjoy spicy foods if they wish.

Always See a Medical Professional

Ozempic should only be prescribed by a medical professional. “Typically, I prescribe Ozempic for diabetes and have more often prescribed Wegovy for weight loss,” endocrinologist Alyssa Dominguez, MD, tells Keck Medicine. “I have used Ozempic, sometimes, off-label for weight loss, though getting insurance approval for that can be challenging.”

Fried Foods

Fried, greasy foods can make Ozempic stomach issues worse. “Foods high in fat can make digestive side effects worse. Since food hangs around longer in the stomach, it has more time to cause problems,” Sarah Bullard, MS, RD, LD, tells Signos. “Some studies have shown that consuming too much fat can increase symptoms of fullness, nausea, and bloating in individuals with digestive issues and heartburn. Reducing fat intake resolved symptoms.”

Do you want to get your glutes sculpted for summer? Sophie van Oostenbrugg is a fitness trainer and the founder of the Gains with Brains app. She regularly shares workouts with her 2.4 million Instagram followers on how to burn fat and build muscle. “I grew up hearing that women should be as small as possible. That’s why I loved being able to share my bulking journey on social. I’ve done 2 bulks so far.. and I was thinking about starting and sharing a 3rd one,” she wrote in a recent post. She also revealed her “medium leg day” workout, which will help you tone up fast.

She Does Multiple Leg Days a Week

“I have good news today..it’s a medium leg day!!!🫣🤭sooo I split my leg workouts & currently have lighter, medium and heavier days. this helps me with recovery, train through a variety of rep ranges and make it more enjoyable,” she explains in the post.

She Does 8 to 12 Reps of Each Exercise

In the video she explains that she has “multiple leg days per week.” She goes onto reveal all of the exercises she does with “rep ranges from 8 to 12.”

RDLS

“I started with RDLs, four sets of eight,” Sophie reveals. To do Romanian deadlifts, start with both legs pressed evenly on the floor. “Slightly bend knees while bending over,” says The Body Network’s Resident RDN, The Diet Diva, Tara Collingwood, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD/N, ACSM-CPT, a Board Certified Sports Dietitian. “Keep your arms pointing down toward the floor and lower with you almost touching the floor. Keep hips and shoulders square facing forward throughout the exercise. Return to standing.” She suggests repeating 10 to 12 times with the right leg and repeating on the left side. “Progression includes holding a weight in the arm pointing toward the floor,” she adds.

Sumo Squat with Kettlebell

“Then I moved on to a sumo squat with kettlebell. You know the deal, form over everything, so go slow and control the weight,” she says. Sumo squats are similar to regular squats, only you point your toes outward.

Glute Bridges

“Then I did glute bridges,” Sophie continues. You can do glute bridges with or without weights.

Cable Step Up

Next up? Cable step ups, using an exercise block. “These are great as they help with balance and therefore they're easier to overload,” she says.

Seated Leg Curl

She sits down at a machine. “Then I did a seated leg curl,” she says.

Core Exercise

“I finished with some core exercises,” Sophie concludes. “I want to get my core as strong as humanly possible so I can keep recording more intense ab workouts.”

Do you want to accelerate your weight loss? Go on a hot girl walk. Joy Maria (@therealjoyymaria/video) is a weight loss influencer and mother who lost 70 pounds in less than 11 months. One of her secret weight loss weapons? “Hot girl walks,” she reveals in a video. “Walking is a thousand percent, the most underrated way to lose weight,” she adds, “and one of my favorite things to do is walk.” Here is everything you need to know about how she lost weight, including some great walking tips.

She Recommends Walking After a Workout to “Cool Down

“I love walking after training because it's low impact, and my trainer's pretty intense. So it's just kind of like my cool down. I can listen to podcasts, I can answer emails, I can talk on the phone, scroll on TikTok, whatever. So get to walking, sis,” she says.

Calorie Deficit

In another video she details “exactly” how she went from 230 pounds to 160 pounds in 10 to 11 months. “If somebody is telling you that you can lose weight without being in a calorie deficit run because they're lying,” she continues, calling it “the most important step” to losing weight. “I know you guys have heard the saying, you cannot outrun a bad diet, and it's so true. Google, TDEE calculator. From there, put in your information. I'm gonna tell you exactly how many calories you need to eat. I ate about 1600 to 1800 calories daily, just depending on my activity level for the day. If I did two workouts that day, I would eat closer to 1800. If I had a more sedentary day, I would eat closer to 1500 to 1600.”

Meal Plan

Next she recommends a meal plan. “I have a seven day meal plan available at the top of my profile. It just makes it really easy when you're going to a grocery shop, when you're first starting out, when things are structured, it's gonna make it a lot easier to follow and just to stay consistent, not skipping breakfast, especially if we're exercising.”

Here Is What She Eats in a Day

Her favorite breakfast is “avocado toast on sourdough bread, one hard boiled egg,” which she seasons, adding truffle hot sauce, two pieces of bacon, and one piece of sausage. “High protein, good, healthy fat, and a healthy balance of carbs,” she says. “This can also be a breakfast or a lunch because it is super filling.” Another favorite is yogurt bowls made with Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurt with granola blackberries and blueberries. She also likes tunacado sandwiches with sourdough bread, cheese, tomato, avocado, and pesto basil spread. For dinner she might have a small bowl of Turkey chili.

Hydration

She also drinks “a ton” of water, “like a gallon of water a day,” she says. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends that men should drink about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day and women about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids. Why is hydration so important? Water helps get rid of waste through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements, keeps your temperature normal, lubricates and cushions joints, and helps protect sensitive tissues, according to Mayo Clinic.

Working Out

Working out is the “second most important part,” she says. “I was taking group classes when it first started. They were high intensity bootcamp. From there, I got a trainer at the same gym. I also work out on my own. If the gym intimidates you, I strongly recommend you guys try some group fitness classes. They're a really great way to hold yourself accountable because you're in a group setting and the people around you can motivate you,” she adds. “I incorporated Pilates about nine to 10 months into my fitness journey, and I wish I would've done it sooner.”
